The dongle is needed to use the controller. I was a bit disappointed in this as I was hoping it would use the Xbox 360 built in radio. This does also work for PC and is a fine working controller.

My husband and I recently dug out an old Xbox 360 from the basement but the original controller no longer works. This replacement controller came with the USB receiver and works perfectly with the console. It’s a little darker blue than I expected but It has a nice matte finish.

This controller is perfect. The Xbox 360 controller is, in my opinion, the best controller ever made. At least as far as hand comfort and feel goes.I have no issues getting the thing connected to my PC. It just works. The range is good too. I was using it in another room under a blanket and it still worked. This controller is identical in every way to my old wired 360 controller. This one might be even more sturdy, I'm not sure. My theory is that when the 360 controller was discontinued, the manufacturers took the logo off and used the back stock, or just continued using the molds, thus producing the exact same product as the official model. Just without the Xbox logo, which is a plus for me.Anyway, this controller is a perfect 360 knockoff, in a time where you just can't find an official 360 controller for sale anymore.

Obviously this isn't an official Microsoft XBox Controller, but it's the best stand-in I've had so far. I previously purchased a Voyee brand controller and experienced ticks with it immediately, like wandering joystick motions, random controller power-offs, etc.No such problems with this controller. It connected to my 360 immediately and all the buttons work the way they're supposed to. A simple tap to the power button switches the controller on, and though it won't power-up the console, you can shut it down the way you would with an actual 360 controller. This wireless controller includes a receiver (which plugs into either of the console's USB ports) but though I've not tested its signal distance, I haven't experienced any interference or lag between controller action and game action. The joystick action is smooth, the button and trigger actions are smooth, and the controller actually feels a bit lighter than an actual Microsoft controller. It requires two AA batteries, so you might want to consider using rechargeable batteries for extensive playing.Overall, I'm very pleased with this product and would recommend it for those looking for an affordable and effective replacement controller.

***EDIT 1/30/2023***My original review was favorable but my opinion has changed dramatically. After initially using and testing it a few times, I was mostly happy with it (minus the keeping my screen on thing). Then I got sick and didn't play any games for a while. I got better but when I was finally ready to play a game I turned everything on and... nothing. The controller refused to connect to the receiver. Nothing had changed except I turned on the USB port it was plugged in to. Fortunately, it was still (barely) in the return window so I returned it and got another. It arrived today. When I plugged it in, the receiver never powered on - no blinking light. To be safe, I tried to connect to it anyway. Again, nothing. So now I have to return this one and find something else. I should probably be thankful that I dodged a bullet and came out getting my money back. A few days later and that would not have been the case.***ORIGINAL REVIEW***This actually feels better to use than my Microsoft controllers. I was pleasantly surprised considering the price. The receiver is another matter. Unlike my Microsoft receivers (which admittedly have their own issues), the receiver that came with the controller keeps my system from putting the display and computer to sleep. The screensaver won't even kick on. As soon as I unplug it, everything is fine. Of course, I can always just unplug it until I'm ready to use the controller but that's just a work-around and I hate work-arounds as a final solution. It smacks of incompetence or poor design.I don't believe this controller can use the Microsoft receivers. I've tried and it refused to connect. I only tried it twice so I suppose I'll give it a few more tries.

So here's what you need to know: This is essentially a near-perfect copy of the old official Xbox 360 controller. The dimensions are the same. The buttons feel the same. The sticks feel the same. The battery compartment is identical and it works with rechargeable packs meant for the first-party controller. It connects to the PC wireless Xbox 360 controller receiver (but does NOT have Bluetooth; You need the receiver to use this with PC) and it is mapped as an Xinput device so it works perfectly with all your recent PC games right out of the box.I even weighed the two controllers. They weigh exactly the same (7.4 ounces) so it's a pretty good bet they have the same or nearly identical parts inside.Control feels good. Buttons are responsive. There are only a couple minor differences between this and the official controller. First, obviously the Astarry doesn't have the Xbox branding on it (no X on the Home button, and no Xbox 360 logo on top. There is a space for the holograph, too, but of course there isn't a holograph on the Astarry). Second, the Home button light blinks in a pattern instead of staying on steadily when paired. That's it.I love the controller. It's everything I hoped it would be, which is to say I wanted an Xbox 360 controller that was like the official one, but for the lowest price possible, and this is as close as you're going to get with that goal. It's fantastic.I was a bit sad that the blue one is more expensive than the black one. I would have liked blue, but I can't see paying more money for a different color. It should be noted that this doesn't come with the PC receiver for Xbox 360 controllers. That's sold separately. I have two of them myself; One's an official one, and the other is a cheap knock-off, and both of them work with this controller. I do not have an Xbox 360 anymore, so I can't test this on the console, but I assume that since it connects wirelessly with the receiver that it will also connect to the Xbox 360 without a problem.Unfortunately, these are such perfect replicas of the original Xbox 360 controllers that they also inherited two of the Xbox 360 controller's well-known issues: First, the analog sticks are super-sensitive, which makes delicate movements in some games hard, requiring you to set up low sensitivity in game or widen dead-zones with third-party software. Second, the D-pad is an 8-way disc-style pad instead of an inlaid cross. This means that occasionally you might find yourself pressing left or right when you mean to be pressing down or up. This requires getting used to the controller's design, but it's not a "flaw"-- It's just how Microsoft designed the original, and it's what's replicated here.If you're looking for a low-cost alternative to the official controller, this is your best choice. I'm not just saying that, either. This really is an excellent third-party controller. Five stars, as long as you understand what you're getting.
