I bought these specifically for making sourdough starter. Tried making the starter in a large mason jar but the mouth area is too narrow and the jar is too big so itโs hard to stir. These tulip jars are a nice size which should be easy to work with and the glass is thick and good quality . The item arrived within a few days of ordering on Amazon.

I bought these two Weck tulip jars for my sourdough starter and theyโre perfect. They are easy to clean because of the wide mouth. I like the tulip shape because not having harsh corners helps with scraping the sides down after mixing. The lids on this jar is also interchangeable with my larger Weck jar, which is nice. The seal is effective when the rubber stopper is used. Worth the money for the sturdiness and ease of use.

This size is perfect for sourdough starter because is provides room for expansion when you feed the starter. If you have ever had a starter container explode you know the cleanup is not a pleasant experience. The clips take some getting used to in order to get them on right but that is just the way Weck jars are and the good part is the lids don't get cemented on like threaded ones. Besides looking nice, the round shape of the jar and large lid makes it easy to feed the starter and scoop some out when you need it.

I have a pet named Eddie. Eddie is a colony of yeast and bacteria that I've been taking care of for several months, and Eddies home used to be a deli container, but that was hard to keep clean, and if you put the lid on, Eddie would escape explosively. I needed something easier to scrape clean, and with a lid that kept closed, but allowed gas to escape. Enter the Weck jars.I guess you could use these for canning and pickling, as they come with rubber gaskets pre-installed and some clips to seal the jars, but we won't be needing that for sourdough culturing. I want to make a starter, not a yeast bomb. The shape of the jars lets me get in there with a spatula to scrape down the sides and do my discards without making too much of a mess. The mouth is wide enough to add flour without spilling it everywhere, and the over all construction of the jars is solid and heavy. They scream "Quality".It was odd spending $20 on 2 jars, when a Ball canning jar would do almost the same thing but for far less, but they are harder to scrape out because of the lip for the lid, and their lids seal tight so you have to put them on loosely or gas can't escape. All in all, I use this product every day, and having 2 of them lets me swap out Eddie's "cage" for a clean one, as flour will inevitably cake the inside of the jar over time, no matter how regularly you scrape it down.

These jars are perfect for sourdough starter. They are wide and sturdy. The lid sits on top to allow for air to escape. I will admit, it came with some kind of rubber band contraption that I cannot figure out how to work. So, in my particular case, for sealing these air tight, I would say itโs a no go. For that reason, I took off 1 star. If I could only take half a star I would do that instead because I imagine most people use these for sourdough and for that purpose alone they get 5 stars from me.
