Be aware when you buy this, even though its glass center, Amazon shipped in a bubble wrap little baggy, then in a amazon envelope package, not a box, i don't know if it was damaged in shipment but it lasted about 30 min before the water heater shut down again and the glass in the part was broke

Installation was simple and quick - no need for a technician. However, one thing to consider - I'm not sure of the temperature trip setting on this device. I installed it before taking note of this. There are something like five different temperature trip settings depending on the water heater. Since this is safety device, you want to make sure that the trip setting is not higher than the device that came with the heater. Although physically identical, each device has a different trip setting and corresponding color code.

A bit pricy, but still cheaper than replacing a whole hot water heater. I'm iffy on the fact that it shipped to me in a soft plastic bag, but it did arrive intact. I'm having a professional plumber replace my entire burner assembly as the stock one failed, thankfully THIS part functioned as intended and shut down my whole hot water heater; I can see why this is a mandatory safety feature for gas systems.

Looked everywhere for a replacement combustion shut off device or auto called thermal release device. For my Rheem hot water heater. Put new part in and water heater started right up

Works fine. Fast shipping. Almost double the price you can find it elsewhere but you will wait for slow shipping. Surely appliance techs have it in stock but will cost you more if you buy it from them if they install.

Congratulations, if your not an Heating & AC Tech, you just figured out the little part that stopped your appliance from working! so how does it work... If the vents pulling in the air for combustion get blocked, the combustion chamber heats up and the oil in the little glass cylinder expands and pops. It's filled with an oil that doesn't emit a vapor and wont combust when the little glass breaks closing the bottom vent and suffocating the flame thus turning off the water heater in my case... i don't know what other appliances have these... So now that you found the right part, how do you replace it? TURN OFF THE GAS FIRST ALWAYS!!! Unscrew the lines on the bottom of the controls, and there should be a few screws holding in the burner assembly where the little glass is, you need to pull those screws and the whole burner assembly off. Take a wet vac and try and get as much of the glass out so you don't get it in your hand while replacing it. This thing rotates up and off. once you have the housing off, grab the new one. You will need to press down with even pressure and a pretty good amount of it until you can rotate the tabs under where it catches... This can break during shipping and installation so BE CAREFUL. The first one that i got had a little oil on the inside of the bag and there is a real fine point where the glass cylinder meets the bottom metal pc where it sticks through the metal pc... my first one was slightly chipped at the top but didn't all the way pop... Amazon took care of it and processed a replacement fast and easy, just feel bad for the seller as it should have been boxed and not shipped in a soft package... it's real fragile so if you see any oil on the inside of the bubble wrap little package this thing comes in, stop there and return it... as soon as it heats up it will pop and you will be back to square 1 only have to spend the $ on another... once you get this thing in place, you can put the burner system back into place, hook up the lines and turn the gas back on... always helps to make sure all the connections are properly tightened and there aren't any gas leaks.. if your heater doesn't initially start, turn it to off for about 5 min and try the mfg outlined procedure again... or call an AC tech... i'm just a consumer that had to figure out what this thing is, how it works and how to get my hot water back so the fam would stop complaining about cold showers... lol. Have a great day!!!
