oh how I struggle to sharpen my chain by hand...spent hours and hours trying various kits and sharpeners and watching videos...it's just something I haven't been able to figure out. I had 6 useless chains sitting here so I bought this unit. Now I have 6 razor sharp chains for about 45 mins work....GREAT BUY!

First the plus'. The motor seems strong, runs quietly, does not over heat. The wheels provided were well dressed and I expect a long life. They might could be a little finer grit as the surface finish the grind leaves is a little rough for my tastes. The not so goods.... in order that I noticed.... The front scale is put on under tension and does not lay flat against the mounting surface. I will tap one of the rivets out and elongate the hole to allow it to sit as it should. The knob and spring arrangement for holding the adjustment the base to the chain holder is wishful thinking. Throw the spring in your parts drawer and replace it with 3-4, 1/2" flat washers. problem solved. The blade guard is a joke, you can not install or change a wheel without either removing the blade holding base or the the motor assembly, and the hole drilled in it for the shaft locking provision is off center of the hole in the shaft. Also the cover for the blade retaining bolt went in the trash as it flops around if loose enough for it to sit flat, or sticks out like the Little Rascals ear if tightened enough to secure it. Said trash can solved that problem. The blade holder was put together wrong. There were 2 flat washers between the fixed and moveable rail, taking apart and reassembling with 1 behind for a spacer, 1 between for proper chain orientation solved the problem. Also the pivot "boss" on the motor carrier will ultimately need to be replaced with a more durable piece, probably a properly dimensensioned SHCS, if you do a lot of adjusting as it is poorly designed. I only sharpen 1 chain, so it will not be an issue for me. I would buy it again though, as the hour that I spent getting everything to work properly was much less than a Comparable Oregon or whatever would have cost. Happy grinding!

Made well... A little bit of patience is needed putting together. Not the easiest to install the grinding disk. There is a hole at the bottom between the disk and motor to keep the shaft from moving when installing the disk. Slide a small screwdriver in the hole to hold the shaft. Practice is a must so use a crappy chain until you get the hang of it. Grinding disk is fragile so get a better one from the start.I'd buy again for sure. Just replace the disk from the start.

Without any experience it took a while to get set up and grinding properly. I got an super sharp and strait cutting chain when I was done. The chain support base doesn't lock perfect on mine but it is easy to compensate and get a good finish.

I have to divide this review into two parts. The tool itself is a great value for the money. It's well designed, easy to set up and use and the quality of the tool itself seems like it should cost more than it does. I've attached 3 pictures to demonstrate my point.First, the manual. If you open the back cover, page 9 is a parts list. Page 8 is what they title an "assembly drawing", what is usually referred to as an exploded diagram. If you look at the picture, what you get is a bunch or circled reference numbers that point to nothing. Only a problem if you need to order replacement parts.Second, an issue mentioned by at least one other reviewer. The sharpener comes very well and securely packaged. Neither the cardboard nor the Styrofoam were in any way damaged. However, the first thing I saw when removing it from the box was the damaged scale on the top rear of the base mount. It's a thin metal strip with rivets holding it to the frame, and was bent and torn between the 55° and 60° mark. I was going to return the tool at that point until I found that it's basically redundant and not necessary, as there is another scale on the inside vertical face of the base mount that does the same thing. The inside scale is dead on accurate; the damaged scale (riveted, it didn't move) was 5° off. That was the bad part. The good part is that once you get is set up, an easy and straightforward process, the tool works great. The motor is described as "commercial", and I believe it. It's quiet and smooth with almost no internal vibration. The switches are covered in clear vinyl, which will help keep the grinding dust out of them. I have both Husqvarna and Stihl saws, which use different chains. If you understand going in the pitch, gauge and different angles that your chain requires, it's all pretty straightforward (there is a chart in the manual). Use a Sharpy to mark your first tooth, and sharpening an 18" chain takes two or three minutes. It takes that long only because you have to change settings when you go from the right cutters to the left. The only thing I found was that the left side cutters have a slight burr on the finished outside edge. Don't know why, don't care. It goes away as soon as you start cutting and makes no difference. I took a couple of old junk chains I had that had met more than a few rocks and practiced on them. They cut like brand new.If you cut a lot and pay to have your chains sharpened, this will pay for itself in very little time.
