I use a polyurathane varnish because this provides a separate protective hard coating over my acrylic painted minis. This works well and will not "wash out" any of the acrylic paint effects that acrylic varnishes can do. Be willing to accept a standard "matte" coating and not an "ultra matte" and some colors will still retain a satin sheen.

I used this satin varnish on a plastic model aircraft kit. It result in a very good semi gloss finish.
