Might be worse than free handing. They are not built square and the geometry of the tool makes punching evenly difficult. Look for other options where the post is centered not at the apex

Couldn't get the large punch to cut through a single veg-tanned belt blank. Had to fall back to using a utility knife. Takes a beating, though. May work better if I have time to sharpen them.
