The photodiode needs a bright light to get it to trigger and has a range of response times from 200-700ns. With a brighter light, you will get a faster response time.

I used one of these to fix (replace) my automatic headlight sensor in my truck. The OEM sensor was $85! I fixed it for about a dollar instead. Of course, I had to figure it out and this took some time, but that was half the fun and satisfying to know I did it in the end. It works perfectly.
