A great way of getting data from a troublesome hard disk.

The unit was very compact as expected. I have not attempted to use it yet because I was able to accomplish what I needed to do in another way. I believe it will come in handy in the near future. It included the power supply and ide power connector. It is very light but should be easy to connect and use.

I have a old harddrive that I was trying to get stuff off of for a while. I have over 1400 hours worth of music production projects on the harddrive that was starting to fail. After I plugged it in this thing made it feel like it was as brand new drive, I was able to go ahead and move out all the files from my old harddrive to my SSD and I couldn't be happier with this product at all.If you do occasional IT work for friends or family like I do, this is a must have tool you need in your toolbox. Absolutely amazing product would recommend to anyone trying to get stuff off their old harddrive.

While the unit is easy to use and will accommodate a variety of hard drive types, it will not recover data from a dead drive as the description implies.Added 2-17-2023: Stopped working the second time I tried to use it, completely dead. Power supply checks out, so problem is in the "black box". Bummer, I'm two weeks past the 'return by' date.Amended 2-22-2023: Mea culpa, mea culpa. My second comment relates sort of to my first comment, that is unit can't read dead drives, but if a dead drive is connected the "pilot' light does not light up, leaving me to conclude the unit itself was kaput. Lesson learned, if light isn't on, take a breath and try a known good drive to confirm unit is still working.

Have an orphaned hard drive and wonder what's on it?Get this adapter and plug any hard drive into your USB port on any other computer so that you can read and write to that old hard drive or even erase everything before you send it to the dump. I used it to recover old photos I had long forgotten. Then I erased the old hard drive contents and dropped it off at my local Electronics recycling station.

I am giving it 4 out 5 because there are no instructions (aside from the obvious how to plug it in picture). While it's a pretty simple device and works well, I ran into trouble with the older IDE drives. I got this to go through many of my old hard drives between 1998 and 2014, in particular the 3.5 inch IDE ones, which are a touch trickier than the others because they require an additional power input (which is included). The 12V adapter has maybe a 3' cable which means if you run off a surge protector on the floor or something, you might have trouble reaching the device if you're trying to set it up flat on a desk. The extra power connector to the drive is a tight fit, but it works fine. Here's the kicker though: every time I plugged it into a USB 3.0 slot and powered it up, the drive would be detected, then it would disable and freeze up my machine and I would have to hard reset. I tried this with multiple jumper settings and reboots and still had the same problem on an old 80 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 from 2004. On a whim, I decided to slow down my USB 3 port by plugging in a USB 2.0 hub and plugging into that. Presto! The drive works perfectly good (well good enough to grab all the old photos and stuff off of at least). Anyway, I haven't tried with a USB 2.0 port because they are all inaccessible on this machine, but at least if I slow a 3.0 down to 2.0, I get this thing to work perfectly. Hope this helps somebody.
