Works very well as long as you know how to setup your iPhone to shoot in ProRes video, and there are plenty of videos and instructions available on that. This provides a great way to improve your video workflow and reduce the time to load the videos onto your computer for additional processing. Being able to quickly produce finished results helps you improve your revenue streams. The data cable data rate is important to ensure consistent data transfer. The product comes with the data cables, the splitter and additional USB-C cable. The device itself has a powered MagSafe that enables charging from a USB-C connector. That enables you to work longer capturing great video as it charges via MagSafe while your phone USB-C port will be dedicated for data input and not for charging! However, If you use a phone cage you may not need the MagSafe feature. The product web page has good screenshots of how to connect the device.

I wanted a quick way to hold a SSD for my iPhone recording- I also wanted to be able to pass through a microphone-- Plot twist- with Final Cut my microphone doesn't show, in Blackmagic the microphone doesn't show- the product advises that it includes a USBC splitter- it will work to power your phone but doesn't work passing through any other USB accessories. The unit is heavy weighing 5oz (141g) something to keep in mind if you're looking for a light weight setup. Overall I love the holding power and the cold shoe on the device but was deflated that it doesn't pass audio through. I've since purchased a small hub for audio passthrough for use with this.

As has already been noted, the Galileo Gear Magdrive is a chunky little accessory; it feels like a rock in the hand. That said, it weighs, without an SSD attached, 143 gr., less than half the weight of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. With a Samsung T7 attached, that weighs about 70 gr., for a total weight around 505 gr., a bit over a pound.For my purposes, it has limited usefulness; mainly because I always use a camera cage when I shoot video. Though no fault of the Galileo Gear Magdrive, its circumference impedes with the use of a filter, or at least in the case of the 67mm filter holder I use over the phone’s lenses. And I am always using both a cage and a filter(s) when I shoot video with the iPhone. In addition, the right angled usb-c data cable that it comes with doesn’t fit through the cage to the phone’s usb-c input; of course, another, straight cable can be used.There’s no reason that the Magdrive can’t be attached to the camera cage directly, but then the benefit of wireless charging is lost, and there is lighter, less expensive options for that scenario. However, if you do not use a camera cage, or use a camera cage with clip on filters or no filters, then the Galileo Gear Magdrive may be a viable solution for recording to an SSD while keeping the phone charged. Again though, if the phone is being powered by an external power supply, it’s usually attached to a cage, although I’ve done it with a power bank in my pocket and a long usb cable.The Galileo Gear Universal Magdrive is very well built and performs as the seller asserts. As I’ve implied, just be sure it fits in with your working methodology, or, better yet, enhances it.When I rate an item, I don’t hold it to an arbitrary, ideological standard of my own making, but to whether or not its performance aligns with the sellers’ claims, so that a buyer can make an informed decision. In that respect, I feel the Galileo Gear’s Magsafe SSD Holder deserves 5-stars. It is what the seller says and does what the seller claims, and appears to be of a high-quality manufacture.

The magnet on this thing is strong and is a super convenient way to keep everything together and organized. I use it with or without a case on my phone and it holds on strong. Snap in my Samsung T7 drive and I can put this on the tripod and record safely onto my drive without having to constantly offload footage or touch the setup.

This MagSafe base is a fantastic solution! I love how it seamlessly connects to my phone's MagSafe adapter, allowing me to charge while simultaneously holding accessories. I've got a backup battery mounted to my tripod, an SSD in the base itself, and a shotgun mic attached. It's incredibly compact yet incredibly versatile - a must-have for any content creator! The base is sturdy and well-built, and the magnetic connection is strong and reliable. I've never had any issues with my accessories detaching, even when I'm on the move.

This has everything you need to record the highest quality Iphone footage directly to an SSD.We all know how large ProRes Files are, how quickly they fill up internal storage, and how much of a pain it is to offload them to begin the editing process. This SSD solution is the ticket to address all these problems. With how affordable the SSD market is today, you can pick these up for close to the cost of high end CF-express cards and use them exactly the same way, aside from needing a card reader. Its a simple as shoot, connect to your editing machine, and you're off to the races. No more "memory full" notifications, frantically deleting apps or data on set, or expensive Apple storage upgrades.Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone who is planning on capturing large amounts of video footage on a project basis. The cold shoe mount is very handy to add a Rode wireless mic system or accessory. The design allows for clever uses of the wiring layout and it magnetically mounts directly to your phone.At this price point, the details are all there, thankfully all the cables are right angle, so you're left with a very compact package. This makes for a very minimalist set up and gets you away from giant phone camera cage builds.
