I'm happy with this purchase. It does however have some limitations. May be light sensitive? The easiest way to explain this is to just explain what I needed this for. I had replaced a blower fan motor in a rather expensive window air conditioner several years ago but it didn't work properly. Since it was hot as Hades I just set it on a pallet in storage and bought a new AC unit.Well, the "new" units compressor died this spring after several years and I decided to give this old one another look since it's not terribly hot yet, and if nothing else I need to clear some space in storage. I also kept the original fan motor that I'd suspected was bad. This time I took a fairly deep dive and tore down that original motor which did indeed have a bad armature. I only knew it hadn't been working right. So I tore into that AC unit again to see if I'd wired something wrong or overlooked something - NOPE! But the fan speeds all seemed slow!So I needed to test the actual speed. Sure as heck it was slow by 25% to 35% if this new tachometer is correct. I did some additional resistance testing on both sets of field windings and the windings from the "new" motor did have considerably higher resistance. So I built a Frankenstein using the field windings from the original motor and the armature from the "new" motor. Wow! High speed increased from 990 RPM to 1360 RPM and all other speeds also increased as well. I couldn't have known for sure without using some type of tachometer.Of course all of these bench tests were performed using the same fan with the same piece of reflective tape stuck onto it, and everything was quite exposed. The problem is that once things are partly assembled and other moving (or possibly even stationary) parts interfere with "line-of-sight" readings are unpredictable - or maybe I should say unbelievable.I also found that just the ambient light source seemed to have some effect on the readings provided by this tach. I think that's reasonable given that some of the rotating (and even vibrating) parts are quite shiny and possibly reflective in their own right. So the bottom line is; in an apples to apples comparison of two identical motors spinning the same fan with the same reflective tape attached the readings were believable based on air flow and sound. Also the fans ratings are 1400/1200/950 RPM and the one I built from "parts of two" came in about 1360/1250/990 RPM according to this tach. I'd call that close enough! But it really seems that you must have a very clear line-of-sight with no movement or vibration of nearby parts, and a reliable light source with no flickering light like you'd encounter with a rotating assembly partially obscuring things.

Bought this to adjust lawnmower. Easy to use and seems like good quality.

Works, consistent measurements when compared to my lathe's speed readout.Haven't tested if it has a current draw when turned off (like how a lot of cheap electronics will just chew through batteries even when turned off)Edit: so far still on the first battery after what, a couple years I think? Doesn't seem to consume much juice while off.

The unit comes with a few reflective tape strips. The tape has two problems. First, the backing on the tape is impossible to remove. Second, it doesn't stick worth a darn.
