Very pleased with this purchase. Once I figured out how to get it to pair with my Sena communicators, it works very well...... The challenge of course is that it takes over your communicators, and with each direction it takes you out of your conversation.... but I'm learning.To connect it, it will connect as if it is a cell phone... not like any other communication device. It wasn't simple, and the TomTom tech support were not helpful at all..... but Sena was.... and once paired, it has been awesome to have on the bike.GREAT VALUE FOR MY DOLLAR!!!!!!!!!The only change I would do in hind sight, is the upgrade for the locking mount, and plan better so I could mount it to my fairing, rather than the handlebar.... but still happy.

So far so good. GPS works well. I'm accustomed to TomTom stuff so no learning curve for me but their stuff is pretty intuitive anyway. The winding road feature is cool but it didn't warm me about gravel roads on the route but I'm on a GS so that didn't matter. I would say overall the Rider is a good buy at half the price of the Garmin stuff.

This GPS is a mixed bag. There is one heck of a learning curve. (With my previous Magellan GPS there was really no learning curve.) The problem is that there are too many menu choices making it hard to find exactly what you want.The really great thing about this GPS is that you can plan a route in Tyre, load it into the Tomtom and just ride. As a result you can follow a really complicated route that you probably would not have taken otherwise. But, there are some problems. Tomtom re-plans your route. So, if you don’t have your waypoints placed properly it may take you on a somewhat different route. This takes some experimentation. Also, if you miss a waypoint it will keep directing you back. There is a way to skip the waypoints, but it takes some getting used to. Initially I found it almost impossible to get back onto the route.I find it very difficult (almost impossible) to plan a route or even examine a route using just the Rider. I find that the touch screen and the processor are not that great, especially if you are used to using an iPhone or an iPad. You can enter a destination and hope that it will take you there. However, it did want to take me down many gravel roads that I’d rather avoid.As mentioned by other reviewers, the lack of a speaker is a bit of a nuisance. To get voice directions the unit must be used with a Bluetooth headset. I used it without a headset successfully but will probably get one in the future.The mount is great by the way. It comes with a very good handlebar mount, although I ended up buying a different mount which places the GPS above my instrument panel for easier viewing. I have found that the Rider is easily visible under most lighting conditions. (And, at night, when it’s easy to get lost, it’s a godsend.)

This GPS does everything that the more expensive ones do. Very easy operation. Only downside to this unit is it requires a bluetooth headset to hear the directions.

Good quality, solid mount, Works like my GO for the car. Winding Roads option is novel and enjoyable. I wired into my lighter socket from the back on my Harley Ultra. It's great to have unobtrusive wiring.Only downside is that the screen on 100% brightness is no better (but no worse either) than my other GPS's. This means I can't see it with sunglasses on. The casing peak helps to avert sun glare and I notice there is an accessory hood available. With the peak I don't really need it.

The GPS is great, Very rugged and waterproof. Easy to use, I have two other TomTom GPSs. I particularly like the winding route feature and I like that it is constantly looking for better routes as you ride offering the alternates as they are discovered. There are many neat features that I have yet to use. The record feature is one I plan to turn on for my next trip as I often deviate from the planned route to discover new roads or places. It will be nice to be able to make these permanent itineraries for future rides. I love the trip stats file that is captured for every trip. When wiring to bike be sure to connect it to an ignition switch aux source. This will ensure that it turns on/off with the bike's ignition. No need to use the on/off switch on the actual GPS. No chance of leaving it on and draining the battery. Just so much more convenient. I will be looking to fit a security lock so I don't have to take it on/off the bike when I stop. The TomTom system is too expensive so I will build one myself.I am concerned about the promise of lifetime map updates. I have registered the GPS and I have tried to email TomTom but so far have not received any indication that updates will be sent to me. On my other GPS where I have purchased maps the map downloads have been automatic or if I haven't connected my GPS to TomTom HOME an email is sent to me reminding me that an update is ready for download. I don't know why TomTom haven't answered my email or haven't acknowledged my registration and that the maps will be sent.Happy and safe riding. Always wear a helmet and protective jacket and pants.Update: After contacting TomTom USA I am now receiving update emails about every three months and the downloads to the GPS have been without any problems so I am a very happy camper. The GPS has proven rugged and has worked flawlessly all summer.

I have owned the previous version of the TomTom Rider and was less than thrilled with the long term support, thus the only 4-star rating at this time. With the old unit, the mount was a weak point. After about a year or so, the mount would fail to charge the unit and replacement mounts were not available in the US, only through the TomTom UK store at roughly $100. For a $400 unit, that is a substantial percentage of the total cost. Add to that, the US dropped all motorcycle units from their website and support for over a year before bringing this new version to market and I'm a bit reluctant to give the device a 5-star rating.I also have a Garmin 660 that is my primary motorcycle GPS. This unit sits on my loaner bike or moves to my wife's bike as needed.Having said that as background, I will say that so far, this unit is working well and has a couple of nice features. The maps and basic navigation features are very good and have not lead me down the garden path when heading to my destination, for which I am very grateful. I enjoy the "back roads" feature. It can certainly find an interesting path to the destination rather than taking the closest freeway. I like the option of switching between the navigation modes. The couple that rode my loaner from Los Angeles to Baltimore really enjoyed exploring the twisty roads when they tired of riding the Interstates. The unit always got them where they were headed with no strange side trips. The new Garmin Zumo 390LM and 590LM now include this capability as well.The unit now comes with lifetime maps - a good value and an improvement over the annual subscription service that was the previous model. Along with quarterly map updates, TomTom has user updates that are published on a daily basis. Very helpful.The POI database is one of the better ones as it includes many motorcycle specific locations that are not found in the Garmin database. Also, there is a user supported Speed Camera database included,Tyre is the route building software. Tyre is easy to use and routes transfer easily to the Rider. Better yet, the Rider does not arbitrarily decide to change the routing based on its desire to move you to a preferred route as the Garmin often does. My preference is still to have a direct import of custom maps created in Google Maps but that seems to be not available from any vendor, and yes, I know I can go through translation programs, but that is not what I want.The TomTom community also uploads routes and trips (called itineraries) that other users can download and use. Handy feature.Trip recording is also built into the unit so you can save a trip/route for sharing or running it again.What I find lacking in the unit is stereo bluetooth and the capability to have the unit play music. Yes, you can synch you smartphone to the TomTom, but that is only for making and receiving phone calls. There is no provision for streaming music from the phone, and it would not be stereo in any event. If you use Bluetooth from your music device to your headset, then this is probably not an issue for you. The driving instructions are clear and provide plenty of warning, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road when in unfamiliar areas. If you can glance at the unit, the lane assist is accurate and helpful as well.Overall, I'd call this a success. For $400 if all you need is a competent GPS, than this may be the way to go. If you need or want stereo music, this is not the unit for you, and you are looking at $600 to $800 for Zumo that has those features.
