Safeguard your lens and absorb UV light. Film and video are more sensitive to UV light than our eyes are. This often shows up as a bluish cast in images, especially shots from high altitudes and long distances, particularly over water. The pink cast of the filter gives a slight warming effect for more pleasing images. Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a closely guarded proprietary process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision metal rings. The ColorCore process allows us to control the color and density of Tiffen filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density .

The filter was very dirty when I received it. It had some oily film dried on both side. It was troublesome cleaning it and then I found a small imperfection in the lens. It fit well and is functional although I will think twice before I go with this brand again.

These sky filters used to be common in the film era, but are not so useful in the time of digital cameras and lenses and so are now difficult to find. I usually take photos with vintage lenses on Sony digital cameras, and some of these lenses are sensitive to blue light which would render skies, for instance, as white or very pale. These filters block the blue light, making the scene more natural.

Great build quality on this filter, as always thanks to Tiffen. Provides good warm tones to images even in harsh sunlight. Love this filter, coupled with my 85mm glass. I would highly recommend Tiffen products to friends and family!

I'm sure there are other filters as good. There may be some better ones. The camera store wanted $70 for a Nikon filter. I've only been using single lens reflex cameras since 1967, so I might not be a qualified reviewer. I never had any complaints about Tiffen filters.Just a hint. Keep the shade on, and keep the strap around your neck. Failure to do this when photographing indoors cost me a $1200 Nikon Lens, and the previous filter. Lesson learned.

Consigliato

Perfect protection for lens, plus get better photos. Over the last 5-10 years these have saved our camera's lens three times. I won't say who dropped the camera, but each time this filter broke and the lens was saved - wow huge save! It is worth using this just to keep your lens protected, but on top of that it does improve the pics. Perfect filter for an always on, forget about it solution.

A lens filter is worth its cost for nothing more than protecting your optics. Tiffen makes a good quality pro-sumer class filters. They claim all are optical grade glass. I haven't had any problems with mine and results are consistent and predictable.

Tiffen is, I find, an old and reliable purveyor of optical products that has earned a reputation for quality. In this era of outsourcing this filter is made in the U.S.A. and provides it's designated filtering aspect as well as keeping the camera lens clean and a bit safer from accidental impacts during transport in the field. Good product, well made and at a fair price.

The quality of glass is good, with equally good finish of the metallic ring. Easy to attach and remove. Does not degrade the image quality in any way. I paired it primarily with my Nikon 18-105mm VR lens and was happy with the results -- especially liked the marginally warmer skin tones in portraits, and pleasing colors when coupled with a B+W CPL filter for landscape shots. It stayed on my 18-105mm till I had the lens (moved on to the pricier 18-200mm VR, and happier ever since!).
