While Shafts may appear the same, there are significant performance differences due to the manufacturer’s selected standards, and the manufacturing processes used to achieve them. The linear inner race demands the highest levels of material cleanliness, surface topography, surface hardening, diameter, taper and roundness, surface finish and straightness to provide optimum performance, minimal maintenance and long life. Unlike common shafting, Thomson 60 Case LinearRace shafting is manufactured to the highest quality standards. Our techniques are continuously upgraded with proprietary know-how gained from over 53 years of linear bearing design and manufacture. Using 60 Case LinearRace shafting with Thomson Ball Bushing Bearings ensures optimal bearing performance and travel life.

This shaft is well machined and the bearings fit perfect. Like some of the others said a hacksaw will not cut it. I tried and had to switch to a cut off tool. If you need a well made shaft I would recommend this one.

Maybe it was just a mistake, but I ordered this because of it's specs, and well what actually came was a shaft that was way thicker than 1/4 in and not even close to 18 in. More like 6. Luckily I got my money back, but I'll still need to find a shaft that works.

Highly recommend this stuff for any linear bearing/actuator applications. If you want to cut it or create 'D' sections on the ends, you need to have an angle grinder and a lot of patience. If you want to drill it, you need to have cobalt drill bits and a lot of lubricant and patience. I burned 3 carbide bits to a stump trying to drill through this rod. It's incredibly rigid, and that's a good thing, just be prepared to spend the time to work with it if you need to make any modifications.

I've been buying chinese rods which claim to be hardened but based on how much they flex, i kind of doubt it. This rod is not much more expensive and it's leagues above the chinese rods. This shaft comes packaged really well. Plenty of padding, in a (really) hard cardboard box with wooden ends. Now i just need to get some quality linear bearings, probably from thomson.

These safts seem to be perfect! I couldnt find a spot that was higher than 12.00mm. My bearings felt extremely consistent the entire length of the shaft. Im not used to having shafts without tight spots.

High quality, appears to be straight and true. I have to mention the shipping package - it was exemplary. Shaft inside plastic warp, in a cardboard box, in bubble wrap, inside another very sturdy cardboard bow with 3" wooden ends, and placed in an Amazon cardboard outer box. This is going to be the shaft for my DIY 18" drum sander.

Excellent! Just what I was after. Be aware, that if you need to cut this you're in for a challenge. The case hardening is very well done on this shaft, and was much deeper than I was expecting. I ended up having to grind through it, as I didn't have anything hard enough to cut even through the center. This will alter the hardness near the grind as it gets quite hot, but for my application this was acceptable. If you don't know for a fact that you can cut hardened metal, just buy shorter shafts.Diameter tolerances were within specified tolerances as measures with a blade micrometer. Fit my bearings exactly. I am very pleased with this shaft and can recommend them.
