For students in math and sciences, or for anyone new to graphing calculators, Texas Instruments has created the TI-83 Plus--a powerful, problem-solving tool with features for storing, graphing, and analyzing up to 10 functions. Plus, it displays graphs and evaluates tables on a split screen, allowing you to trace the graph and scroll through table values simultaneously.

The clear, readable display exhibits 12 characters and eight lines, in 64 x 96 pixels on an LCD screen. The TI-83 Plus has a pragmatic key layout and an easy-to-use graphing interface, with a simple programming language for creating conversion programs. This is a great college calculator. It’s easy to quickly change out batteries if needed and keep working.

I'm a math teacher. I ordered this to help me teach statistics. It's an old model, but It's served its purpose, and it came a a very fair price.

My daughter got this because her teacher has the exact same one > so it’s perfect for school. He helped her set it up (I’m not sure what that means), but she said it was a breeze. Definitely worth the $$. It performs every task she needs it for.

I haven’t used one of these in 25 years. While still generally the same Ti graphing calculator I had back in college waaaaay long ago, the TI-83 has some more bells and whistles. Unfortunately, the stats class I was taking required me to have a few more functions than this model had , so I had to run out to Walmart before they closed and buy the TI-84 plus for the exam. I will be trying to resell my Ti83 to reclaim some of my money, but in all honesty, the Ti 83 works fine, it just didn’t have some of the advanced features I needed for my class. You can’t go wrong with the Ti 83 or 84.Edit Update: June 2024 —> I am so happy! I was able to gift a single mom with 3 kids my unused Ti 83. Her oldest son is in STEM classes and is apparently very gifted in mathematics and is starting 8th grade this coming year. He wants to be an “engineer or a mathematician” when he grows up. I’m so pleased that it went to a good home where it will get years of good use. It really is better to give than receive! 😊

Arrived quickly with fresh batteries and user manual. Some sign of wear, but OK overall. I am used to TI-81, this T-83 has additional functions and a much better display contrast. Recommended!

Bought my TI-83+ in high school, used it through college, and my daily work as a hospital pharmacist. While I don't need graphing anymore, we use exponential decay functions and natural logs for estimating antibiotic levels.I feel unprepared without this calculator. When a patient is laying on the bed having an ischemic stroke, and the neurologist is barking at me to mix alteplase STAT, and I need to calculate a weight-based dose, I'm not gambling with a junk phone calculator app that doesn't even display the expression I just input once I press "Equals". I'm not taking a chance with someone's life. I need to be sure.Yes, Windows 10 has a calculator. But have you ever tried doing natural logs on it? You'll want to pull your hair out. You'll get nonsense answers.Even if you don't need graphing, this calculator is great because you can see all the expressions and answers on 1 screen. The ANS key is indispensable; you can quickly use the previous value without having to figure out confusing MEM+, MEM recall, MEM - like on other calculators. Does it have the best screen resolution, processor or memory? No. Does TI have an entrenched monopoly on the Education market? No doubt. It's still a great, purpose-built reliable device that gets the job done.

The TI-83 Plus is an older model of programmable scientific calculator. This is the 4th one we each use. I am an electrical engineer, and my wife is working in medical nutrition at the clinical level. We each both need a practical type of calculator for being able to quickly solve equations we each commonly use. Her applications are in the bio-medical field, and mine is with solving electrical engineering problems. We each have over 20 different formulas written in to our calculator. We also keep a calculator on hand as a spare in case one of these fail.I was able to write the software coding based on required formulas and save it to this model of calculator. We have the original detailed instruction books for this calculator giving examples of the coding and process about how to write software in to this model type. It is fairly involved, but works out very well. This calculator model is a very advanced type for its size and gets the equations easily and quickly solved. It is much more convenient for portability than using Excel or some other type of math software on a laptop. We have the TI calculator management software installed in our computers, and can back up the calculator's programs to the computer's data drive. We have been using this model of calculator since it came out and being used to it and very proficient with this model, makes our preference is to not change the model. There is a newer equivalent version with advancements for the display and etc.We have been using this model of calculator sometimes every day since 1998 when they came out. Over the years with use they have eventually failed. Sometimes the calculator may be dropped, and over time with use there are wear factors involved. With near daily use and for at least an hour or more per day we are getting about 4 to 6 years of use from each calculator. This is terrific. The memory battery lasts about 3 years average in these. This is not difficult to change. The main batteries last about 6 months to 1 year with daily use. There is a procedure to allow the memory battery to be changed without losing the programs stored in calculator. With the data transfer cable that comes with the calculator it is possible to back up the calculator's programming and variables to another one like it. There is also the silver USB type interconnect cable that allows this calculator model to be backed up to a computer using the TI calculator management software.

I was using a TI-89 which is far superior, BUT, it is not allowed in the math department at my university only the TI-83 Plus, TI-83, and TI-84(including their various releases). The calculator FEELS very basic, however, with a little knowledge you can take the calculator on through Calculus 3 as I understand, I dont believe that it can do derivitives so you'll be writing those out by hand. I purchased "TI-83 Pluss Graphing Calculator for Dummies" And I would say that a book of that nature really is mandatory, its no fun hunting thing down on the calculator itself or within the different tabs, say math for example you may never know that what your looking for is in one of those tabs. The advertisement for this calculator is a little decieving it says you can transfer files to and from your calculator. This is true but you have to purchase a special cord which is essentially a 3.5mm jack(not sure actual size) on one end that you plug into the bottom of the calculator and a USB connection on the other end. You also have to download the software to move the files from the Texas Instruments website. None of this really matters in my opinion because as little as two programs will fill the calculators memory, not worth it. The graphing calculator is well made, seems a little light in the hand but overall construction is solid. Takes 4 AAA batteries and has an auto shutof of 5 minutes. It really is a decently powerful calculator that will get you through your math and is just powerful enough to not let you cheat. I personally have not taken any calculus so I cant vouch for its usefullness but I was told, by many instructors that this was the calculator to buy and would be of the most benifit, for what the department allows, through Calculus 3. To add to what I said earlier about getting a book, the calculator comes with a pamphlet on how to use it, garbage.
