This is an old-school style voltage tester. What I mean is that it is not a LED-based or neon bulb version that lights up with a pretty consistent brightness. This one is an old incandescent bulb version, like the bulb you used to find in a old flashlight. the kind where the bulb end actually touched the end of the battery. That's good and bad. The good is that, if you have a slightly weaker voltage than expected, say 11V from a RV battery instead of a more normal 13.2V, it will be dimmer. With experience, you will learn to recognize the difference and be able to suspect/detect low-voltage issues. The bad news is these bulbs can burn out pretty easily, and they provided no replacements. Would have like to see at least one spare. These are great for diagnosing issues with 12V circuits. Just clip to a known good ground and touch points with the probe end. If there is 12V present, the light will light up. Way quicker than a meter. Or reverse the clip end and attach the clip to the known good 12V. Then you can probe ground points to ensure you don't have an issue with a bad ground. The bulb doesn't care which direction the current flows, so it will light again. Great way to find loose grounds, etc. as well.I now have three of these I think. I carry multiple (I am a pro RV tech) just in case I break one. They are surprising durable, but face it, at less than $5 they are not made of stone. But if you do break one, it's not a big deal. Just grab another and keep going. I have one in my bag, one in my tool box, and now I'll have one at the bench in the trailer. I use them more often than my actual meter. They are quicker and no worries about whether I turned the meter to the right setting or not.Just make sure not to use to probe 120V circuits. You WILL pop the bulb and since you got no spare, you'll have to head to your backup or by another.

Simple and works as expected. It should last as long as it’s not abused.

This is a review of the Test Light Automotive, 6-24V DC Voltage Tester, Circuit Tester with Alligator Clip and Long Steel Probe, Professional Electrical Tester Pen for Car Truck RV.I received this product free of charge to share my product experiences with Amazon customers to help them make informed buying decisions. This is an honest review from a real person. I didn’t pay for the item, so I will only comment on the apparent quality and utility, not on the value. Prices fluctuate regularly and I always recommend shopping around and comparing what’s available to get your best deal on the date you decide to buy.Picked this up to keep in my RV since it has a lot of ways the 12 volt system can have issues. The tool is good quality and super easy to use. Watch out, the probe is SHARP! This is good so you can really pinpoint your contact points, or if needed you can make a small pierce of the insulation on a wire to make contact. It’s bigger than I thought it would be (I like that) and the ground wire with the alligator clip is plenty long for most checks. It has a range of 6VDC-24VDC4 stars.I rate products according to the following scale:1 Star: Do not buy. Very poor quality, functionality, or other issues.2 Stars: Do not buy. Not as bad as a 1 Star, but it still has major downsides.3 Stars: There are some issues as described in my review. Shop around before you buy4 Stars: This item met my expectations and functions as intended.5 Stars: I love this item. It exceeds my expectations for quality and function.

I have had testers like this in the past. Most of them when the bulb dies so is your tester. This tester has an easy to change bulb and seems to be made to last. The tip has a very sharp point. To easily penetrant the wire shedding. But be careful not to have your finger under the wire. It will go through it as well. I do hope they improve this tester by adding a sound to it, So if your bulb is bad you can tell when it sounds and the light doesn't go on. I think yes this tool dose what it is suppose to do. I would recommend you keep one in your car for any future electrical problems.

This tester is a classic design used by millions of auto repair people. The diagnostic light is supplied by a single flashlight style incandescent bulb, so definitely do not use on anything except very low voltage circuits, because you will smoke the filament and require a replacement bulb (bulb is easily accessed by unscrewing the handle). The product's instructions say not to use on ignition systems and that is exactly the issue with staying with low voltages. I tried it on three different sources: a 1.5 v penlight battery doesn't generate any glow. A 9 v battery causes a medium yellow glow. Two 9v in series (18v) cause a more white brighter glow. The test probe end is very sharp and stabby and perhaps for its purpose should be chrome instead of a black coating, but I made good contact easily. Recommended.

Nothing fancy here. Just an old fashion tester to identify hot wires or locate shorts. Good replacement for my last one from 40 years ago that finally gave out. This one seems to be a lot better quality than my old one. The alligator clip is large enough to connect directly to the car battery node, unlike some that use tiny clips. I like the silicone rubber wire also as it will be less apt to kink or melt if it toughes a hot engine component. One thing worth mentioning is that the black anodized tip didn't allow for the best of conductivity for some reason. A quick sanding of the tip allowed for a better connection during testing though. No big deal. Overall, great price for a simple little tool. I'll update this review if anything changes.
