The Brown & Sharpe Bestest-5 series dial test indicator set has a black face and inch measurements. The indicator can make either horizontal or vertical measurements, and the black dial and contrasting white hand help make measurements easy to read. The carbide, ball-contact tip reaches into the workpiece for accurate measurements of turned, milled, and ground parts, and for tool setting gauges, fixtures, and inspections. The continuous clockwise pointer rotation helps prevent plus or minus confusion and displays reading in fractional inches. The ball-bearing lever system swivels through to 180 degrees. The dial face mounted at the top of the indicator parallel to the axis, and three universal dovetail mounts can be used for mounting from the top, front, or back. Dovetail mounts provide a rigid setup. This indicator has a Monoblock body design with pinions mounted in jeweled bearings in an isolated assembly separate from the outer body, for high accuracy. It is anti-magnetic for safety when used around magnetic workpieces and debris, and has full-metal construction for durability and corrosion resistance. This dial test indicator meets Deutsches Institut fur Normung (DIN) 2270, and Norme Francaise (French Institute for Standardization) NF E 11-053 standards, and includes a Certificate of Accuracy and Traceability. The set includes a black-face dial test indicator, a 0.080" (2mm) carbide contact point, a 0.250" diameter extension with dovetail, a point wrench, a Certificate of Accuracy and Traceability, and a storage box.

Dial readings with three digits, such as 0-10-0, signify that the indicator has a balanced dial. Dial readings with two digits, such as 0-100, indicate that the dial has a continuous dial. Balanced dials are used to read the difference from a specific surface reference point. Continuous dials are used for direct readings and usually have a larger measurement range than balanced dials.

Dial indicators are also called dial gauges, dial calipers, and probe indicators. These precision measuring tools are used to accurately measure small linear distances and object sizes. The dial magnifies the measurement so that it can more easily be read by the human eye. Frequently used in manufacturing, laboratories, and other industrial or mechanical fields, dial indicators are used anywhere a small measurement must be found and recorded or transferred, such as checking the variation in tolerance of a workpiece. Standard dial indicators measure the displacement along the axis of the indicator. Dial test indicators are very similar to dial indicators, except that the axis of measurement is perpendicular to the axis of the indicator. Dial and dial test indicators can be analog, with a mechanical dial, or electronic, with a digital display. Some electronic models transfer the data electronically to a computer for recording and potential manipulation.

Brown & Sharpe manufactures precision measuring equipment and metrology hand tools. The company, founded in 1833, played a key role in setting industrial standards in the United States. Brown & Sharpe was acquired by Hexagon Metrology in 2001 and is headquartered in North Kingstown, RI.

Nice box for indicator; How the lens on the dial face all scuffed up; why? Any way of polishing it or receiving a new Dial Cover Lens

I use this dial indicator for all my setups. I have a mitutoyo indicator as well, but any time I need to worry about tolerance I use this one.Made a HUGE difference in set up accuracy so definitely worth the money

The photo clearly shows a big face on the dial but this is a small face one. It also came in a completely different box. Not sure if I’ll return it yet

Works perfectly. I paired it with a Noga mag base for use in a CNC shop to check runout, pickup a hole, etc. The bigger face is definitely easier to read, but the smaller face model will get you readings in tighter spots. Couldn't be more pleased.

Smooth action, clear dial, dependable repeatability. There is no substitute for a high quality dial test indicator in the shop. The dovetails on this model are standard and fit all the holders I already had, including a noga.

I spent the time researching test indicators and decided to subscribe to the buy once cry once philosophy and get a Brown & Sharpe Bestest. Well, when my shiny new indicator arrived it... didn't work. The indicator arm was immovable, completely trashed. The replacement indicator Amazon sent me works fine, and appears to be a quality instrument, though i don't love the plastic bezel. The first indicator appears to have been used as its protective plastic bag was not sealed as the second working indicator's was. -1 star for Amazon sending me a used item.

Love the indicator. I was measuring lost motion on my Tormach and my coarser dial indicators (in thous) weren't much of a help. This indicator was easy to read (love the dark background) and helped me determine lost motion to 0.0008 as well as verify that my travel was dead on.

I had to replace the indicator I've had for years (due to a crash) and tried to replace it with another brand which was very poor quality. As I use the indicator daily, I had to replace that one with this B&S. I'm glad to see that B&S has not cheapened their product as soooo many other manufacturers are doing these days.
