I purchased this stick to anneal brass cartridge casings. I cheaped out a little bit over buying the Tempilaq laquer product that most use. This stick works although it is tricky. The consistency is that of a dried up crayon, in the sense that it's chalky yet somewhat waxy. It's difficult to get it to stick to a nice clean case however it can be done. I've found that if you rub the new stick against some sand paper or something abrasive when you first get it, it sort of takes the top layer off and you get a more waxy, usable stick. Just a thought. Apply a line from the neck down to roughly an 1/8" below the shoulder. Spin case in flame until it melts on the shoulder. It's a fairly straightforward process but i'd recommend practicing on some scrap cases before ruining new or high quality brass. Overall it's a good product, I gave it 3 stars because it's not that easy to use at first. If I were to do it again i'd spend the extra 10 bucks for the tempilaq and call it a day. Good luck!

The stick is to hard. Rub on metal and its leaves nothing that helps with Identifing temp. Waste of money. Stick with paint

Bought the worng style of product. This is a hard pen and you swipe it against the hot metal AFTER you heat it. By the time I do that the metal has cooled. Wanted the liquid of the same product line. But it works if you are fast enough.

The stick is made up of a yellow chalk-like material that adheres best to dirty and/or rough surfaces. It is designed to melt when it reaches a given temperature. The chalk stick is secured by four metal tabs which are tightened by the threaded cap. They must be bent back slightly in order to access the stick. Beware, they are very easy to snap off completely.I used this stick for annealing brass. It took a little bit of effort to apply because it was smooth and clean. However, I had no problems clearly observing when the marking began to melt. I applied heat to each piece exactly the same way each time and the tempilstik marking consistently melted at exactly 10 seconds indicating that it is indeed a reliable indicator of temperature.I would recommend this to a friend and to anyone performing any heat-sensitive work to metals.

A must have for heating metals to a certain temperature, such as annealing brass cartridge cases for reloading,or tempering spring steel for gun springs.
