The spring-loaded center point contacts the workpiece first, then retracts into the center when pressure is applied. This prevents the center point from splitting of your workpiece. The multiple teeth then grip the wood as pressure is applied on the tailstock. Having multiple teeth grip in contact with wood greatly decreased the likelihood of splitting your work. 5/8” diameter. 3-3/4” long. Hardened steel. Morse 2 taper (MT2).

I almost lost the center spring adjust pin, it flew outwhen I got curious about how far it springs in and out lol,I got lucky and found it, good thing I wasn't pointingit toward my face, it is under a lot of pressure. This spur seems to be machine incredibly well, I'm gladI bought it, it is just the size I needed.I'm quite confused about how they actually measurethis , I find the diameter of the 'head' to be right at3/4'' , not the 5/8'' I thought it would by readingthe listing but I guess that is the nominal measurementor they're actually referring to the dia of the teeth, or...At any rate, the 3/4'' is small enough for what I neededit for.

The product is great, I like using it on really dense wood. The center point fell out after about two weeks. I called the vendor to report the issue. While I was talking with Sam I noticed that there is a spot for a set screw on the side. The screw was missing, apparently fell out during use. I told Sam what I discovered and she said don’t worry we will send you another one. I thought she meant another set screw but she meant another center drive. That was super good customer service. This is the first center drive I have owned with a spring loaded point and set screw. Now I know to make sure the set screw is always tight.

I like to make my own floats out of balsa for salmon fishing. The standard chuck that came with the lathe would commonly tear out the balsa wood and ruin my project. This solved the problem immediately having all those teeth to dig into the ultra sort wood really spreads out the load. I still have to be careful when I am taking a lot of material off to get a rough shape but the difference is substantial. I’ve had it for several months and used it often, couldn’t ask for anything better

It's possible for the center pin to fall out if you don't keep the pressure screw tight. Mine got lost in a massive pile of wood shavings and I had to replace it.

This works great, I use it for small projects and it does exactly what I hope it would do. I was making some small boxes and this small spur drive held well and gave me room to work up to the end of the blank just like the live center while I turned the blanks round. Very pleased with it.
