Tascam has been making recorders for a very long time and might just have invented the technology. These are the best in the business, and this one has all the features you would expect from a high end device. Fortunately, it's fairly reasonably priced. I would recommend this for any musician or even content creator. You're going to get excellent audio, and with the newest technology implemented you can even record louder highs without straining the resultant recording. Something cool about this device is that you can record a track and then you can add to it later. Not something you will see on your average device. You can even lock out the interface button so that previous recordings and settings don't get messed with. The thing I like most about this particular version is that you can change the twin microphones from pointing inwards, as is common, to pointing outwords, all depending on where you want your focus. Is there a singular speaker or point you want to record or do you want to record a larger area? You decide! If you're serious about your music or about your content, this is the way to go. If you just want a recorder for everyday stuff, this will absolutely work, and it's probably a lot more durable than your average recorder, but if there's any inkling in your mind that you might want to expand your horizons later, I would say get this over your average product. It should stand the test of time and still be relevant years from now once you find your feet.

I have an earlier version of the Tascam handheld recorder. It goes back about 10 years. So updating to a newer version was probably a good idea. While this version is a little bit bigger than my former version, it also has some additional features. One of the main things is that the microphones can be angled for better stereo separation. This does make a difference so don't overlook it. There is a version with fixed microphones, but I would recommend this version. The screen frankly looks a little dated, surprisingly. In the product photos it shows it as a blue background on the screen. It's not, it's white. I don't see anyway to change it. So I guess I'll just have to learn to love a white background. You can adjust brightness, which in dark situation is a must. Overall it is straight forward to use. Simply set up your preferences...and press record. I think that is what I like the most about it. It's simplicity. When you need to record...or stop recording quickly...it's a no brainer. But perhaps the best feature of the recorder, something barely mentioned and I had to dig around to find the answer, is the battery. While it uses 2 AA batteries as the default power, you can use the USB jack for a bus power connection to a USB powerbank for instance. These recorders use very little power anyhow and with that ability , you basically will never run out of available power. As with most Tascam products the recording quality is excellent. And it's reasonable price for the quality.

I bought a Tascam recorder. This Tascam DR-07XP cannot be used without a microSD card which is not mentioned in the write up or contained in the recoding device package. VERY misleading! The Tascam SD card that is usable with this unit is listed as $150.00. That makes the total recording unit ( ready to record ) price at over $350.00 ( $159 + 150 ). There are other cards mentioned on Amazon. The Tascam forum site seems to indicate its hard to find the appropriate micro cards that will work with this unit but for far less money. Who knows what to do next?

A few years ago, I shopped for a field recorded and ended up with a Tascam DR-40X because I wanted the XLR connections and 4 track capability. Now I've received this DR-07XP to compare. This is an upgraded version of the DR-07X, adding USB-C and 32-bit floating mode. The mics appear identical to those on the DR-40X. My pop filters fit both recorders. Side by side, the DR-40X is slightly bigger and takes 3AA batteries to the other recorder's 2. I haven't had much time with the DR-07XP yet, but the operation and sound quality seem similar to my old recorder.Since this is a new model, the price is not far off from the DR-40X (new version coming maybe?). If you don't need the XLRs and only need 2 channels in a basic compact field recorder, this is really easy to carry around and pretty straightforward to use. Great item to carry around when you don't know you might need it! Microphone placement/adjustment can turn into an artform with any recorder, but this will record faithfully and cleanly with a good setup.
