I decided to upgrade my Synology to a model that supports 10GbE SFP+. Unfortunately none of Synology's smaller 4 or 5 bay NAS can be upgraded to support 10GbE so if you want to connect with Fibre SFP+ modules then the 6 bay DS1618+ or 8 bay DS1819+ seem to be the cheapest options at the moment. At least there's capacity for adding more drives in the future!I read in several places that quite a lot of 10GbE NICs are supported in these devices but Synology themselves only seem to support their branded accessories for their devices (i.e. this definitely applies to RAM modules!). I decided that, although much more expensive than a regular Intel or Broadcom NIC, that the Synology branded one is the least likely to give me any problems with compatibility and support.Installation of the card was really easy and was simply a case of removing the NAS chassis and installing the card into the single PCI Express 8x slot.I've installed 2x 10Gtek 10GbE SFP+ SR transceivers in the card and they are working perfectly. After powering up the NAS the dual 10GbE NICs were detected as LAN 5 and LAN 6 without any need to install any drivers or additional packages. I created an 802.3ad bond with both NICs and this had no problem working with a Mikrotik CRS309 10GbE switch configured the same.Performance-wise I 'm really impressed with this NIC and it totally destroys a 1GbE connection. The bottleneck has now moved to my disks and array which will probably be improved by adding more disks at a later date. Some benchmarks and cached reads seem to be able to easily max out a single 10GbE NIC which is really impressive.Pros:- Genuine Synology product- Excellent performance- Dual port which supports teaming and adds redundancy- 5 year warrantyCons:- More expensive than other NICs

I moved into 10GBE with my Synology, but the Intel Atom CPU in it was too slow to really make full use of 10gbe speeds. Imagine my delight when I moved to a higher-end QNAP NAS and installed this Synology card in it. It works! Despite being Synology branded, it’s of course running from someone else’s chip (if memory serves, Mellanox).I post this info since I imagine it’ll be useful to others.

Due to having a leftover one of these and a need to get a Windows system to connect to our fiber network - I thought I'd give this a go.If anyone is wondering, yes this works just fine in a windows system. It identifies itself as a "Mellanox ConnectX-3 Pro" card and the standard drivers from Mellanox work just as one would expect. The Mellanox software support site takes a few minutes to get the hang of it and figure out which download applies - but if you click on the software links and read through the brief descriptions it quickly points you to the driver you need for Windows Client or Windows Server.Supports both Windows and pre EFI/BIOS boot loading for network loading (automatically came up on my screen as soon as I put the card in a PCIe slot and booted my system).

Put this card in my Synology NAS and purchased a 10Gigabit network switch, Cat6a network cables, and 10Gigabit network cards for each of the computers and I'm very happy with the results.I am now consistently transferring files over the network at around 650MB a second. Speeds up to 750MB a second depending on network demand.

Works without an issue. Took the random modules i got off ebay without fuss and does direct links to two other ESXI host, both with ebay cards and ebay modules. Super over priced, but works. 1817+ on 24/7 fully loaded with drives hosting many VMs, never had an over heating issue - room between 70-74 degrees.
