Bird Toys for Small Pet Birds

Super Bird Creations bird toys designated for small pet birds are suitable for birds including budgies, lovebirds, parakeets, parrotlets, small conures and cockatiels. Even finches and canaries will enjoy toys with shiny bells, swings and preening features.

Since 1992, Super Bird Creations has been focused on designing bird toys and products to address the instinctual needs of pet birds to help ward off boredom, depression, aggression, and destructive behaviors by stimulating physical activity, curiosity and mental engagement. Our bird toy designs utilize a diverse selection of stimulating materials and encompass all the critical destructible, interactive, comfort, exercise and foraging bird toy categories necessary to ensure the well-being of pet birds.

For small bird toys we utilize softer woods like balsa and sola as well as natural plant materials to encourage exploration and chewing. Of course, we also incorporate lots of other fun and colorful features to stimulate their visual, tactile and auditory senses and to challenge their minds.

Depending on your bird's individual preferences and playstyle these toys may also be suitable for birds in other size categories. Please see additional size recommendations on the individual product pages.

Playthings with a Purpose!

Instinctively, pet birds are still very much like their wild counterparts. Play is a natural behavior for parrots. Wild parrots have been observed engaging in several different kinds of play including object play, balancing games, play that involves movement, acoustic play and social play with other birds like “chase me” or pretend fighting.

However, in captivity, opportunities to participate in natural activities have been reduced to a bare minimum leaving a lot of “free time” often leading to boredom which in turn has been shown to result in the development of behavioral, mental, and physical health problems.

Providing enrichment in the form of purposely designed bird toys can alleviate boredom. Bird toys are more than mere playthings when it comes to your bird! Providing pet birds with opportunities to chew, forage, preen and explore is critical to their well-being.

Bird Toy Types and Benefits

  • Foraging toys - Toys in which treats can be hidden, skewered and or imbedded to encourage movement and exploration.
  • Destructible toys - Chewing is a major activity in the wild and essential to maintaining beak health.
  • Exercise toys - Swings and Bungees challenge a bird’s balancing skills while ladders and ropes promote legwork and increase climbing activity.
  • Comfort toys - Pet birds, especially when they are alone, like to snuggle up to or crawl into something soft and cuddly. Tents and snuggle toys help to alleviate their stress and provide birds with a sense of security.
  • Preening toys – Materials like seagrass and crinkle paper provide an excellent outlet for birds to satisfy their desire to preen and to discourage feather picking and mutilation.
  • Mechanical toys - Birds are very intelligent creatures, and many enjoy untying knots, undoing nuts and bolts and exploring and manipulating toy parts.

Make sure the little door IS CLOSED! I have a parrotlet who fits perfectly into this little "cage." Thankfully I was watching her crawl around and in it and while they can fit their small bodies through the bars, I could see her panic and she stopped moving. I helped her get out and she isnt injured in any way. Just please be careful!!! If you arent going to be in the room w them, make sure that little door is closed!!! It comes open easy so maybe close it with a zip tie!! Other than that, she still loves to play with it and rip out the paper and treats. Just please please be careful!

I bought this fun little toy for my 5 year old Love Bird and he absolutely adores it. He has not picked all the paper out yet even though he's had it in his cage for several months (he usually would have picked the paper out but I think he likes it the way it is). This toy also makes for an excellent foraging toy when it has paper in it, I added a little piece of spray millet into it and my bird had an excellent time picking through it to get to the millet. The real fun began when my bird found out he could stand on it. He absolutely loves toys that swing around, and even more so loves toys that are very high up on the cage that he can stand on, so he climbs on this all the time. This toy could also easily be refilled with new (bird safe) paper shreddings in different colors, or filled with treats for your bird to forage for.

My Parakeets don't go near it. For one thing it is way too small for their large cage. I'm glad it wasn't too expensive. You pay for what you get. I am one disgruntled customer!

My parrotlets love this toy. My male, Neddie, actually sleeps on it! The great thing about it is after the paper is all pulled out, you can refill it with other paper and little snacks for them to find. This is a great toy. It would be good for cockatiels or budgies as well. Any small bird would love this foraging opportunity. You really need to keep them entertained and busy, and this does just that! I honestly think this is one of the best bird toys I have ever purchased, and I have 4 birds so I'm buying toys all the time. Highly recommend!

My birds went crazy on it!! They love things like this so I wasn't worried. I have 2 cockatiels so it lasts a decent amount of time. The best part it that it is refillable. They have already emptied it twice so it's paying for itself. Would but again. It also looks like a bird cage it's just to cute!

We all like this toy as it's refillable. I saved the stuffing from other toys too and re-stuffed it several times. Good for treats too!

It's a good toy -- well made and sturdy. For birds who like to pick at things in toys I'm sure it works very well. But for my two cockatiels it's been largely ignored. They basically ignore it unless I put treats in it. The cage-toy had all the little shredded filling it came with months ago. I don't know if it's just my two boys, or if it's a species thing, but i was hoping for a big hit and got a 'meh' reaction. They'll show a little interest if I load the thing up with nutriberries, and the bars are close enough together that I can push in the treats but they don't just fall out.

We have six budgies/parakeets and it was not quite the hit that I was hoping for. They do use it but not as much as I had hoped. Most of their foraging toys last a few days to a week maybe two. But this cage has lasted almost a full month with its orignal paper that is came with. They just don't care for it as much.

My parrotlet loves this toy! I fill it up with paper from the shredder and she empties it out at least once a week. You will have to refill it because the paper it comes with does not last long. But that is the point of this toy!Long lasting fun for birds and highly recommended.
