The Strathmore 400 Series Watercolor Softcover Art Journal contains Strathmore's intermediate grade of watercolor paper, which is popular with watercolorists of all levels because of the fine and even washes that can be achieved. The paper has a strong natural white and traditional cold press surface that makes it ideal for lifting and scraping applications, mastering watercolor techniques, or for finished artwork. Softcover Art Journals have a velvety softcover in rich dark brown, and feature durable Smyth-sewn binding, allowing pages to lay flatter.

Good quality and bends nice when you get to the last pages. It’s not copic marker proof to where it doesn’t bleed through the page but it won’t go on to the next page. I was able to do watercolor pretty good too!

In regards to how this paper accepts and presents liquid media this paper is superior. This particular cold press watercolor paper is the paper that has made me finally appreciate cold press paper. The final product looks superior to my other papers of similar weight and texture.

This is very nice paper and quality. I like the color and the weight. I’ve only used it so far to swatch gouache paint. I will use it with dry and wet media, and post images later on. I wish the price was a bit cheaper. But the sketchbook is big so I can split pages in smaller sketching sessions. Instead of focusing on filling a large page. I wish they had this same one in something smaller like a 6x6, 5x5 inches or 3x5inches. But all in all is very good.

These journals are my favorite sketchbooks to use for dry mediums and i also love their watercolor sketchbooks too.

I just finished a Sketchbook class, and this Sketchbook worked wonderfully through wet on dry techniques, pen and ink, markers and Wet on Wet Watercolor. The pages are thick, quality paper and the book was fairly stiff, which I wanted. When I opened the pages pressed down, they stayed nicely put, the outside edges needed a clip, but when clipped, stayed open nicely, no problem at all. Great quality, and easy to work with.

I love the feel of the paper, as well as its responsiveness to the media. There is only slight buckling to wet media, and no bleed through. It is NOT good for permanent markers, like Sharpies or alcohol markers or Posca pens-it doesn’t bleed through with the Poscas, but goes pill a bit. But for watercolor, acrylic paint and gouache, I like the way it takes the paint and colors. I like working in Pilot B2Pballpoint and various brush markers, and I really like the nuance of stroke and intensity I can achieve. This is my second such sketchbook, and will continue to use it in the future.

I bought this mixed media journal because I love how it looks and it lies almost completely flat. While I love the textured paper for drawing with pencil, I have been a little disappointed by how it handles water-based paints. I find that if I do more than two very light washes, the paper starts to fall apart and ruin my artwork. Honestly, I think my expectations may have been too high- I was just really hoping that it would handle my gouache better.Other than that, it's a really nice sketchbook. I actually really like the softcover because it's very flexible and soft, and it really does lie pretty flat. It's a great, portable size, and would be great for sketching on the go.Overall, I would rate it 4.5/5 stars, because while I wish it handled watercolor/gouache a bit better, it's still quite a nice sketchbook.

This journal fits right in my bag hassle free, so I have it with me all the time ready to sketch. The page is not too small, so I enjoy the space I have for anecdotes and drawings.

Personally, this journal isn't for me. The pages are good quality but I dislike the cover greatly. I'm also conflicted by the binding. Since it's a mixture of glue and stitch binding you have to press down and break the glue binding for it to lay flat and you can see the unsightly glue binding. Along with that note, it doesn't truly lay flat. -1 star.Since it's softbound the corners should have been rounded so the edges won't be worn and frayed as badly as fast. Although the paper quality is good, it still warps and puffs up from breaking the binding for it to lay flat and thus I feel like they should've incorporated an elastic closure. -1 star.Since the cover is soft PU leather it is extremely easily indented and fresh out of the delivery package it was already greatly marred. I didn't mind that much but for something to be labeled "new" and arrive worn irked me just a tad bit.I highly suggest going for the white paper if you're going to do watercolor so the color won't be warped, but for acrylic and gouache you could go either way.One thing that I like a lot about this journal is how the pages of one side are the same texture. There's the more natural grain side and then the machine press side ( it's more "gridded" and smooth).
