My e46 has 275k miles so it was not surprising that the brushes in my steering angle sensor were worn out.The instructions leave a great deal to be desired. They don't tell you that the brushes go in turned upward (I believe) so that they scratch the surface rather than sliding on it as one would expect. They don't tell you how to secure the brushes in their slots (you poke the pointed tool through the holes to bend the tabs on the brushes).I hoped that I could replace these brushes without removing the steering column. That is not possible on an e46. Also, most instructions on the internet do not explain that you have to retract the steering column until the smooth band in the splined shaft is beneath the releases for the steering angle sensor so that the releases can be pressed. It was just as well that I had to remove the steering column and completely remove the steering angle sensor, as replacing these brushes is a very sensitive operation. I would not have wanted to attempt it under the dash.
