Add 2 external and 1 internal FireWire400 port to any computer with a low profile PCI slot. This 3 Port PCI Low-Profile/Half-Height 1394a FireWire Adapter Card turns a motherboard PCI slot into two external IEEE 1394a FireWire slots (1x6-pin, 1x4-pin), and provides an internal (6-pin) FireWire port that can be used in place of the external 6-pin connector - a cost-effective solution that lets you connect any FireWire 400 device to your desktop computer. Compatible with either Mac or PC computers, the 1394a FireWire card can be installed in small/micro form factor computer cases, and includes both standard and low profile/half-height brackets for easy installation. A practical solution for connecting iPods, MP3 players, portable drives, digital camcorders and more to your desktop computer, the FireWire 400 adapter card supports hot-swappable connectivity, allowing you to plug, unplug, and swap your FireWire peripherals with ease. A versatile FireWire video editing solution, the adapter card can be installed in a PCI 5V or PCI-x 3.3V slot.

Simple to install, all I needed to do was swap the bracket from half to full height, plug it in and power up. Worked from the off and enabled me to get video from an old JVC digital camcorder.I found it useful having both 4 and 6 pin ports, so I didn't need to get an additional cable.Installed on Windows 7 64.

Installed on older Asus motherboard running an AMD Phenom Quad 4 3.5 CPU. Windows 7 Pro recognized the card instantly and installed the drivers with no issues. The computer is offline. The cable that comes with it has the small Firewire connector on one end, so you can get a regular one and run two external. The third one is internal - not much use to me. Had to move the card to the included full sized bracket - 2 screws - easy. I have an MSI GeForce GTX 650 TI taking up the two slots above this. A bigger card would definitely block the fan. This one is really short, so no problem - almost completely out of the way of the fan. Exactly what I needed at a good price. Plug and play. Just hope it holds up long term, but no reason to think it won't. Looks well made and solid feel when connecting the cable. Not much to it, but it works. Using it to connect a Mackie Onyx Satellite to Ableton Live for recording and playback. Worked first time. It's a 400 card - not an 800. But, the Onyx is 400, so perfect.

Works fine on a Win 8 desktop. I wanted to use a 4-channel firewire audio interface box and this card gave the connection.A big problem with firefox software on all my computers, XP, Vista, Win 7 and Win 8 is that it wrecks the computer stand-by operation (when firewire is activated in device manager) such that there is no longer any normal stand-by possible, just a complete crash, needing a reboot. Not sure if this is the device's control panel or its drivers. Thus, the only way to operate is to set the Windows stand-by wait to several hours such that it basically never happens. Hot unplugging firewire has a similar effect. At night Windows has to be shut down completely then it reboots OK. This is a generic problem, not confined to any particular card.As firewire is getting a bit long in the tooth I'll probably stay with USB interfaces in future for audio as these cards are much more stable and can be hot plugged without screwing up the computer software.

I upgraded the motherboard on my PC and it did not have a FireWire port.I need the port to transfer video from my digital video recorder.Installation under Win 7 Pro was easy: turn off the system...turn off power to the motherboard...plug it into a PCI slot...turn power back on...and Win 7 recognized the ports and installed the necessary drivers. After several months, the card continues to function normally.

Someone said this worked with Windows 7 so I bought it. I should have researched whether this worked for a 64 bit computer. It does not fit in the slot in the computer; however, I had a 32 bit computer and it installed it on that one. Works fine there.

Ordered this because it is low profile and my computer case requires that. This item did not work in my new Lenovo desktop as it caused a blue screen hardware parity error. Reseated it and it still did not work. Tried online chat at the support site and nobody answered. Will return and buy a different brand. To be clear, there are only two external ports on this card. one standard and one mini. There is a standard internal port on the card, but it cannot be used simultaneously with the external standard port. If you are looking for a card with three ports, this is not it.

I had to upload videos from a camcorder only to realize that my PC desktop does not have a firewire. I had been using a MAC laptop which has a built-in. After researching here, I purchased this for my Dell slimline desktop. Plugging it in was the easy part. Then the computer couldn't recognize it. After spending what seemed like a gazillion minutes jiggling it around, finally my PC recognized it. The software worked. Then I plugged in my camcorder, but now the computer wouldn't recognize it. I tried with another cable, restarted the computer several times to no avail. I gave up. 2 days later when I tried again, it worked! This was such a pain, but it works just as expected once you set it up. Hope you won't have to go through my experience. Enjoy.

I bought this for a Dell Vostro 200 Slimline desktop computer that I didn't think to order with a firewire card when I bought it. I've wanted to be able to do faster transfers with my and to be able to connect a video camcorder.I don't know why I waited so long to order and install this card. I guess it's because I wasn't 100% percent sure it would fit. I shouldn't have waited. It took me all of 3 minutes to install it, and most of that time was taken in figuring out how to get the computer case apart. All I did was to take off one of those blank little plate thingies, position the StarTech Firewire Card over the place where it plugs into the computer (I looked up a diagram on the Dell website to see where the PCI slots were) and push it down firmly into place. (If you start on one end and kind of rock it in, it seems to be easier). Then I just put the cover back on the computer and Voila! Instant firewire port!I would probably have paid a lot more at one of the big box stores if I were even able to find one of the slim line models. This one works perfectly. My computer knew it was there right away. It's easy to install, even for a 60 year old woman who isn't too much of a geek and hasn't added one of these before. It's about the same level of difficulty as adding memory to a computer. Or changing a filter cartridge in a refrigerator. Or cleaning the lint filter on a clothes drier. It's much easier than hooking up components to a new stereo receiver or trying to program a VCR.Next time I'll be able to do a video review when I install something because I now have a place to plug in the camcorder.
