When purchased with the others in this line, a child can create their own inventions by combining them. Our grandson is very adventurous and mechanically inclined so this was right up his alley. This is his third one. Nice tough toys, too.

My wife bought this site-unseen on Amazon, and it is a wonderful gift for a 4-5 yr old child who likes to "work" on things (i.e. take things apart, lol) and/or who likes "big worker machines."In the box, you get one completely assembled toy and one easy-for-kids-to-use plastic combo screwdriver/wrench. All of the "bolts" holding the toy together are red. Simply show the child how to use the tool to remove a bolt, then sit back and enjoy the playtime. (Be ready to demonstrate "righty-tighty / lefty-loosey" and help w/ RE-assembly the first few times.)The plastic parts feel very durable and fit together quite nicely. You can even mix-n-match parts with other Stanley "take apart" toys to create all kinds of fun things. However, I took off "0.2 stars" because...1. This toy is intended for little kids to take apart, but no replacement bolts are included. If you lose 1-2, no biggee, the main unit will still assemble. If you lose more, well... I can't find extra BOLTS for sale anywhere, not even on the StanleyJr website.2. All the bolts are the exact same size, except for ONE in the middle joint of the bucket arm. That bolt doesn't fit anywhere else, and the bucket arm is incomplete if you loose it.But hey, that's part-n-parcel with this type of toy, and we're all pretty much "aware" of that reality when ordering toys with parts that are made to be disassembled. Still, those are minor "gotchas" so I docked it 0.1 star for each, but still rounded up to 5 stars - LOL.Final Recommendation: This is a terrific quality toy that's very engaging and has lots of "re-play" value.

It challenged 5 year old but did not frustrate. 7 year old enjoyed full disassembling and reassembly. This comes apart more than I expected. Stood up to play by 5 year old boy in sand. According to one panel of the box, it is a kit with other machines and shares body parts but the only thing in the box was the excavator.
