These are made to come apart. The top easily slides off so the bottom can be cleaned.My issue is the "lid" has become loose and wobbly on a few in this set, and because of it feels cheap and flimsy. I like the different colors for guests to remember their personal fork with, but the two-piece design is a bust for me. Not worth the $12 I paid. Better off finding an older $5 one-piece set at a local estate sale.
