Square D Homeline 20 Amp 2-pole Combination Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (CAFI) help keep people and property safe from the effects of dangerous arcing. These arcs typically occur out of sight; inside walls or electrical devices, day or night. This circuit breaker is designed specifically for use on shared-neutral (multi-wire) branch circuits where the neutral connection is "shared" between two separate circuits. The Square D CAFI circuit breaker uses a state-of-the-art Arc Detection Technology to continuously monitor the circuit and quickly turn-off the power (trip) when a dangerous condition is detected. Best of all, this technology is combined with Square D's robust and reliable short circuit/overload protection systems in a small, compact package. Engineered for Value and built for Quality, the market leading Square D brand Homeline Combination Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter combine time-tested performance with state-of-the-art technology to provide one of the safest circuit breakers available today. To help further save our customer's time and money, the Square D brand CAFI circuit breakers are now equipped with a unique diagnostic feature known as Time-Saver Diagnostics. Though circuit breakers typically don't trip very often, when they do it is important to determine the source of the event quickly and accurately. This fast, easy to use Time-Saver technology helps customers locate the issue by indicating the type of fault that last occurred on the circuit.

This is the breaker that I needed for house built in the 50's.

Labelled with a diagram for 2 120v circuits, but also works with a single 240v circuit with 2 poles. Pricey but nice.

The actual breaker has a sticker on the front saying it is not rated for 208 volt Y systems. Keep this in mind if you are using in an apartment or condominium unit.

Worked great, and made my electrical inspector happy enough to "PASS" the outside temp. power pole for my construction site.

These AFCI breakers are expensive, like 10 times more than a standard breaker. But, what can you do -- code requires them. I'm sure these manufacturers are loving the code requirements; your wallet might not enjoy them as much. All of that said, they're easy to install and haven't had any issues with them yet (11 circuits run with these breakers and not a single faulty trip). I guess it gives a little added comfort, too, that your wiring is good, neutrals and grounds are properly separated and a fire won't break out if there's an arc.Just wish the cost was a little more reasonable.
