Speedball’s heritage in printmaking began over 75 years ago by pioneering the manufacturing of water-based inks. Since that time, Speedball has become a true one-stop-shop for all things block printing, offering the broadest range of inks, surfaces, tools & accessories and block printing kits available on the market today.
Please note: We highly recommend using a bench hook to hold the block securely in place before carving.

I’ve tried knock offs and nothing carves as smoothly as Speedball. No crumbling material and my stamps hold up over time.

I was looking to get started in carving again and these were great. I knew getting just one or two blocks wouldn't be enough. I typically go all in and also need enough to not feel too precious with my materials. These are a nice size and manageable. I'm not surprised I like them as speedball is pretty consistent as a brand and these fall inline.

Speedball has never let me down for stamp carving supplies. I've received several packs of carving blocks from Vine and have ordered a few with my own money, and have been nothing but impressed. They're super easy to carve with my Speedball linoleum cutter. I have tried several other sizes and 4x6 is my absolute favorite. Smaller sizes are more difficult to carve and I tend to waste more.Highly recommend.

I’m not new to printmaking. I’ve experience with western style etching techniques on metal plates. Within the last few years, I’ve been trying to teach myself the Japanese art of Moku Hanga woodblock carving and printmaking. But this is the very first time I’ve tried my hand on carving Lino blocks with the intent to use them for printmaking purposes. Please keep this in mind when reading my review. It has proved to be quite the learning curve for me to try and carve these blocks after having grown accustomed to carving woodblocks. The tools I’m using are the same type of knives that I use on my woodblocks. However, I use my machine created knives for these blocks rather than my imported handmade knives. That’s because I’ve read that the Lino blocks will dull knives much more quickly than wood carving. The experience has been,…interesting. I can’t compare it to other Lino blocks, because I’ve never tried to carve them before. I can tell you that I much prefer woodblocks to Lino. Perhaps it’s my lack of experience or skill, or maybe it’s the knives, but there is no way I’ve been able to achieve the same level of detail and accuracy on Lino that I can achieve on wood. But no two artists are the same, or want the exact same things from their chosen medium and tools. I can see using these blocks for prints that don’t require the same level of detail. Some people go with that for all its worth and achieve spectacular printmaking results. I’m not one of them,..or else, I’m not there yet in my artistic journey. I don’t even know if I’m doing things right with these blocks! For example, they are very floppy floppy. They make me want to glue them to a thin wood board or block, and then I realize I don’t want to waste the wood that way, so should just carve the woodblock directly. However, I’m really glad I’ve tried what is for me a new medium. I’ll put them away for when my art skills catch up with them one day.

Thank you. I tried a cheap version of this product and the other pink stuff was really crumbly and didn't allow for any detail at all. I'm a beginner and my first block cut was with a Speedy-Carve block in a beginner's kit. It worked well, and I thought I would be clever and buy a cheaper version of the multipack. Turns out the other stuff is junk. This Speedy-Carve works really well, and I was able to do the carving I wanted with the detail I wanted. This stuff is great. Thank you.

I love this printmaking product. The Speedy-Carve material is relatively soft and rubbery almost like an eraser, and it's easy to carve with linocut tools. Compared to standard gray linoleum, it's easier on your hands while carving, doesn't seem to degrade in quality over time, and doesn't tend to chip or crumble. It can be easily cut to size and you can use both sides of the block. On the flip side, the squishy material deforms slightly as the tool moves through it, which can make detail work much more challenging. Keep the flexibility in mind, too, if you carve small, stamp-like pieces as in my photo example. I pressed too hard on them and the "chatter" showed up around the print. I used a standard stamp pad for the feathers in the photo.
