I used this to replace the latch on my Weber Smokey Mountain 22 1/2 inch smoker. The hole needs to be enlarged to allow the proper fit. I would recommend using a file to open the hole because it cuts through the soft aluminum quickly. I enlarged the hole in about 2 minutes using a metal file. I was afraid a drill could tear up the aluminum. Your choice. Southco has a utube video on the assemly as well as a pdf file via their web site. Easy and works great. Much better seal than the original latch.

Hate the latch that comes with the Weber 22" Smokey Mountain Cooker? Get this, it's awesome and doesn't have that cheap feel to it. It seals the door better. You will have to make the hole a tiny bit bigger (around 9/16 to 5/8). I used the Neiko 10193A Titanium Step Drill Bit Set.

I'll preface this by saying I bought this handle, as it appears most people did, to go on a Cajun Bandit replacement door for the Weber Smokey Mountain (WSM) 18.5". It was very confusing whether this was the product I needed and whether it would fit the door properly: it is, and yes you do need to drill through stainless steel to put this in a CB door unless you bought the door that came with a latch identical to this one. It isn't a great solution due to its relative bulk; it barely fits due to the size of the bolt and you cannot remove the lower grate while this door is on the smoker due to how far the latch protrudes. It should also be noted that this product costs more than a brand new OEM door (although that door is much lower quality). These didn't factor into my rating of the product because it has nothing to do with the actual product, I only mention it here because it appears to be relevant to what everyone uses the product for. To deduct stars for this would be like giving bath salts poor reviews because they didn't get you high enough.The product itself is very sturdy and well made. I deducted a star because it's grossly overpriced for what it is, and it was missing one of the washers; if I really cared I'd have gone to Home Depot and paid a few cents for one, but alas I did not.

This latch does not stay put. I got this latch to go with my Cajun Bandit steel door for my 18.5 WSM. It worked for 1 smoke and after that, it's been nothing but a pain to use. In fact, I have switched back to the original aluminum door because the latch actually works. The issue I am having is that no matter how much I tighten the lock nuts, the latch still spins around in the door when I turn it to open the door to check the fire, etc. There is a little notch on the inside of the latch that keeps coming out of the slot it's supposed to rest in, to keep the latch moving in sync. I've tried just about everything I can think of to keep the latch in place like it's supposed to be, but no luck. I am not sure if I got a faulty latch and don't really want to spend the money on a new one. At this point I am not sure what to do. I have considered buying another aluminum door and and using that latch on the Cajun Bandit door but I am not sure the hole is in the right place. I see that this part has gotten good reviews and I am curious to know if others have this same issue & what the fix was. The latch does seem durable and well built but seems that is was overengineered.

Latch works very well. I would give it 5 stars but there were no assembly instructions included. I googled it and found them on one of the forums. It was easy to assemble once I got them.

Bought this as a no sweat replacement closer for the door on my 18" Weber Smokey Mountain smoker.It worked, but only after lots of drilling, sanding and fiddling.

I upgraded my Weber Smokey Mountain 22-inch smoker with a stainless steel door from Cajun Bandit, who suggested re-using the stock Weber door latch assembly. Midway through smoking 15 pounds of pulled pork, the stock Weber knob broke off spilling part of the stock assembly into the fire and I had to McGyver the door shut using a few guitar strings. This latch is a great upgrade to the stock Weber door latch assembly, and seals the door tightly and prevents the smoke from escaping through the side of the cooker. It will get warm during smoking, but it is a very solid piece of hardware and a great improvement for the Weber Smokey Mountain smoker.

When putting a gasket on the WSM door for better insulation (and block airflow), the original handle won't work anymore. This handle works perfectly once you get it dialed in and the nuts tightened down. Take your time with this process because once the smoker gets hot, it is not as easy to make adjustments.Also, the handle can get pretty hot, especially when using high heat on your smoker so I generally put on some cotton gloves or pot holder gloves when opening it up to add my smoke wood to the smoker.
