This was bought as an upgrade from a Tascam DR40x and it blows the Tascam away. Easy to operate, easy to use, and it sounds fantastic! I am currently using pairs of EM272 clippy mics, RODE NTG1s, and DIY hydrophones. I am very happy with the purchase.

Using the MixPre-6 II was a shock. I didn't expect it to improve my audio quality as much as it did. It allowed me to hear the differences in self-noise that my shotgun and condenser mics exhibited, whereas before their differences were buried in the noise of my camera preamps. The MixPre 6 II preamps are almost noiseless and better than any preamps in a DSLR, Mirrorless, or Cinema camera. I found the headphone preamp from the MixPre6 II was incredibly clear and detailed... monitoring the same audio from my C70 sounded like I was underwater. If you own an expensive microphone you'll be limiting its potential if you don't buy an equally excellent audio recorder. The MixPre 6 II is that for me, and a huge step up for my video production!

There's nothing to say about this other than it's the single most awesome piece of gear I've ever had.

Great quality. There was an issue with my device, after the recording I couldn't get the xlr cables out - I used some of the really cheap xlr cables. Contacted the customer support by email, and they responded promptly and took care of everything, including shipping and service. Before buying the mixpre6 I've read in the reviews of this company's fantastic customer service, and I can also say they are excellent! They mentioned that the mixpre should work with any xlr cable, but my guess is that it is probably best to use the better cables, like the ones that have Neutrik connectors.

This mixer / recorder is great for shoots. I have used it for podcasts in studio and works well there also. the recorder is a good backup for computer recording in studio. This version has a time code generator a good add-on. Plan to use it a lot.

I am absolutely in love with this recorder. I am primarily using it for on location environmental recordings including ambisonics, but I also use it for some voiceover and podcast work. The preamps are insanely clean, and 32-bit float has entirely changed the way I work. I can focus more on getting the mics into the proper locations and less on watching my meters.

First off, at this price point this is hands down the best sounding recorder available. Beautifully transparent and quiet. The transport buttons and the channel switches are large, clear and very easily used. The build is excellent and the menus are easy to understand and use. However, if like me you are a one-man-band prosumer, there are a few things that you need to be aware of before choosing this model. This recorder is designed to be used in a bag. Yes, Sound Devices will tell you it was designed to also be used under a camera on a tripod, but in this configuration there are many frustrations to deal with. The first is the retracting screw on the top of the unit. You cannot access it without clear access to the bottom of the unit, meaning changing anything mounted on top means disconnecting anything mounted on the bottom. Second, removing the 4AA batteries from the sled p[provided is impossible without a sharp tool. And believe me, the 4AA battery option will last about 15 minutes of "on" time, meaning bring LOTS of batteries. A better choice, and probably the most practical one is to purchase a Sony "L" battery, a charger for it, and the optional sled to mount it, another $100. Other external power supplies need to connect either by USB-C or TWO USB-A cables. Yes its that power hungry. And powering using these cables makes the power switch almost impossible to get to.But there's no denying the wonderful atmospheric sound the recorder delivers - again, unequaled at the price.

If you're wanting to move up into some higher in audio gear, Sound Devices is a great place to look. This thing has all the bells and whistles, easy to use interface, finally a timecode generator built in too so you can jam it and not have to keep a sync box hooked to it, nice layout of buttons and more room to get your fingers around stuff which is why I ended up passing on the Zoom F-6, dials are too close together on that one imo.Only thing I don't like is the battery sled, it's a bit awkward to use.
