Additional Features

Nano AR Coating

Effectively suppress reflections that can cause flare and ghosting with Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than lenses with coatings that use an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.

Circular Aperture

When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.

Aspherical lens elements

Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight.

Internal focusing

Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter.

Focus hold button

Once you’ve adjusted focus to where you want it, pressing this button on the lens barrel will keep the lens locked to that focusing distance. The preview function can also be assigned to this button through the camera’s custom settings.

Focus range limiter

This function allows you to set a limit on the focusing range which can save you time during AF operation as the lens will not ‘hunt’ through the entire focusing range. In macro lenses, this limit can be on either the near or far range (as pictured). In the SEL90M28G, the limit is set on far ranges only.

Sliding Focus Ring

The focus ring slides back and forth to select manual or auto focus which together with a focus hold button, inner focus, and a focus range limiter provide optimum control for macro photography making it easier to shoot insects and other subjects that cannot be approached too closely. Minimal focus breathing and quiet operation are also advantageous for shooting movies.

Lens-based optical image stabilization

Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.

Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) for quiet, precise focusing

Quiet, precise DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focus drive - employs piezoelectric elements oscillating at ultrasonic frequencies to drive the focus lens groups. In this case two floating focus groups are driven by independent DDSSM systems for precision positioning of the relatively heavy lenses required for macro photography. The DDSSM drive system is remarkably quiet, making it ideal for animal and insect photography, as well as for movies. It also improves the precision of “focus wobble” employed to achieve optimum focus when shooting movies.

Love this new macro lens, a bit heavier than other brands like Sigma & Tamron, etc.But the extra weight is worth it.If budget is not an issue, this is an amazing "portrait" & Macro lens!

Edited:Bought this same lens from camera store, dont trust the transport anymore. Worked flawlessly. Picture quality is amazing. Bokeh is very nice and easily achieved.Ring light is necessary if you want to shoot bugs or tiny things unless it's very bright.Still bit scared about the build quality. I've had other sony lenses and never had problems.DMF focus mode (in camera) helps if autofocus is too iffy. I feel that or manual focus is needed for bug shots. Autofocus will suffice for anything bigger or farther away.Original:Just received this sweet macro lens. Hook it ip to 7RM3.Camera display shows "flicker". F number shows --. There's no auto focus. Turning off auto stability. Testing with different focus limits. Nope. Nothing. Happens. Lens doesn't make a sound either. Switch to manual. Also defective. Doesn't focus at all.Oh bummer, like so many 1* reviews here, I've gotten a dud.It was shipped in a original box, looks unopened. Box wrapped in a plastic bag. No extra insulation, bubble wrap. Nothing. Not a conciving way of shipping expensive lenses.Returning as defective and trying another one. Was really hoping getting some bug shots.

Extremely sharp, great focusing - AF and manual. The only thing I don't care for is, in AF mode, having to use the manual switch to set how far away from the subject you are. 3 choices: 0.28m - .5m, .5m - infinity and Full. Theoretically, you could leave it set to full and wait while it hunts for the subject at any distance. I found Full only works from about a meter and beyond, and quickly a few meters+. If you want the AF to snap to focus almost instantly, set the switch to your working distance. It doesn't work well when subject is 2 or 3m away, or about .5m away - which position is going to work? In that case, find high contrast spot or use MF. Just takes some getting used to.

This is a great lens. For macro shots and portraits, this lens is awesome for the money. A lot of sony shooters on youtube seem to include this lens in a list of “must have” lenses amidst more expensive gm lenses, which leads me to believe the optics are good enough even for pros and serious hobbyists. My wife and i have a few sony ff bodies, and though merely hobbyists, we are both really impressed with the lens’s sharpness and bokeh. The lens caps in this bundle are also very nice. And the flash is a nice addition. In fact, i would never have considered even getting the flash if not for this bundle. My wife is learning how to get good images using flash so there is a lot of fun learning for her to do, I would have happily paid more if there was a very good tripod in this bundle, or better yet, i would have preferred it was a little less and not gotten a tripod at all.All in all, this bundle is well worth it in my hobbyist opinion.

I am a new learner on DSLR system and this 90mm prime is my first upgrade over kit lens. I am very happy with the performance of this lens. As you will see from images attached, the macro capabilities of this lens are phenomenal for a beginner photographer like me. This lens also serves equally well for portrait and landscape shots. Being a 90mm, you definitely cannot frame your portrait shots at close distance to your subject. For a decent bust level portrait, you will need a minimum distance of at least 2 metres from your subject. However, for Macro photography, you can take this lens as close as few centimetres to your subject and the resultant images are excellent in clarity and sharpness. The manual focus adjustment ring on the lens serves well to do quick fine-tuning for some of your shots. Overall, I am happy with this lens selection and the reason which prompted me to go for 90mm F2.8 instead of 50mm F1.8 and 85mm F1.8 is the dual utility of macro and portrait.

First off, great lens. Fantastic at macro, great for portrait. If you want a Sony lens with stabilization and fast auto focus, this is the right choice. But you can't buy lenses from Amazon anymore. You HAVE to buy lenses through B&H now.I'm not going to give a product less than a 5-star rating just because Amazon (not a 3rd party seller, Amazon itself) sold me a broken and clearly used product as new. People in the photography community know to never buy lenses through Amazon's 3rd party sellers because of the scams (Google it, it's very rampant and there's a few well-known kinds of high-ticket item scams out there through Amazon 3rd party sellers). And I thought that buying new items through Amazon proper would be safe.Nope. Amazon sent me the lens. The body could not talk to the electronics in the lens, and the lens would not even manual focus. I inspected the lens and saw dust on the last lens element, and then checked the first lens element (the lens that faces the sensor), and saw a finger smudge and more dust. I checked online and found that the lens hood and a protective reinforced bag should have came with the lens and it did not.Unfortunately I had a wedding gig coming up so I didn't have that lens available for the job. So that cost me a little bit.In short, GREAT lens. Can't recommend it enough. But you can't buy lenses and other high-ticket photography items through Amazon Prime anymore. They are selling used items as new.
