After I accidentally over fertilizing my plants even when I switched to a urea free milder fertilizer I wanted to start testing the soil of my house plants. A month ago I repotted and changed all of my plants soil and wanted to make sure I wasn’t over fertilizing after cutting back on frequency. The only good thing I have to say about the kit is that the test tube is good quality and the pre-measured scoop made things quick and easy. The test strips work… just not in any way that’s useful. Let me explain.I should have paid more attention to the color panel on the kit but I was in a hurry. Anyways when I first opened the test strip jar the foil seal had already been punctured, like someone had used and returned it. Wanted to test the accuracy of the strips first and dipped one stick in drinking water for exactly 2 seconds. Pulled it out waiting several minutes and nothing happened. Tested a second strip left it in the water until I saw the slightest color change start to happed which took about 20 seconds of being submerged and swished around to happen, and it wasn’t much the slightest spot of blue green that quickly turned back to original color. Tested 2 more strips and it wasn’t until the 4th one that I got an accurate full color pH change that actually stayed after drying. My spring water has a pH of 7.5-8.5 but from the strips it’s looking more like 6.5. The pH portion of the strip isn’t very sensitive or accurate only 1 of the first 4 strips got sort of accurate on the pH of my water. The Nitrogen color pad however is EXTREMELY sensitive, look how pink it got just from tiniest barely visible piece of dirt that accidentally dropped on it. I tested several strips later on multiple items with various pH’s to see where it stood on overall accuracy and it was not consistent some strips were quick and other were splotchy and inconclusive. I checked for any dates on package and the manufacturing date is 7/2024 less than 6 months ago. So IF the bad inconsistent reading of the strip was due to it being already opened that would mean in less than 6 months after breaking seal these strips become unreliable, either way it’s not worth it.Another thing I just want to point out that the shades of colors for the pH are muted and not that vibrant or distinguishable. I was having hard time reading the colors with clean water, it was impossible to get any accuracy with the shade in brown yellow tinged water.the nitrogen pad can actually get several shades darker than just the 3 shown on the color panel. After I dipped in in my liquid fertilizer bottle which has a NPK of 2-1-6 it turned very dark pink to a purple color so overall this was tested poorly and designed poorly.

This is super easy to use. I like that there are 100 strips so we can test areas all over our yard and make adjustments to the soil based on what we want to grow there. This is super useful and worth the tiny investment.

These test strips help me gauge my soil and plan my garden in the spring. The test helps me understand how to amend the soil or plant appropriately to balance acidity and nitrogen levels.

In planning my garden, these test strips really helped me to know how my soil was doing and what it needed before planting. As a relatively new gardener, having an easy test helped me to understand the PH and nitrogen levels so I had an idea of what to ask at the garden center.

I've been curious about my garden soil so I got this test. I was surprised that it came out with an acidic rating since we tend to have alkaline soil in our area, but I also test straight tap water and some with lemon juice in it and those came out looking OK, so I guess that's a fairly good reading.I amend my beds with compost, so the high nitrogen number makes sense too.So besides having to go get distilled water to test with, it is a pretty easy test to do.However, if you're only testing for nitrogen, you're missing out on the other two main nutrients in your soil, phosphorus and potassium (The P and K of the NPK numbers on bags of fertilizer). If you want a more complete picture of what is going on with your soil, you would want to know about those too and this test does not have that capability.
