Some nice patterns but not as nice or as varies as the second book. Will probably make one or two of these shawls

The purple shawl in the picture is my version of the cover shawl, and it turned out absolutely beautiful. I’m a fairly experienced knitter, but even a newer lace knitter will be able to make the projects in this book. (Don’t be dissuaded by the reviews that criticize the clarity of the directions. The overall directions for each project include the charts, with the written instructions for the lace portions of each shawl set forth separately, for knitters who don’t use charts - but I encourage you to learn to use the charts, as they are definitely the easiest way to make these shawls, or any other lace or cable knitted project). The only downside to this book is that the glued binding cracked easily when I opened the book flat. I took it to the local copy shop and had it spiral bound for a few dollars, problem solved and now every page stays flat and is easily read. I have enjoyed 8 or more of the patterns in this book, making it an excellent value.

Wonderful patterns. It's difficult to choose which ones to knit. I particularly like that there are both charts and written instructions for all of them.I have completed several and have found no errors in the patterns -- which is common in patterns I've gotten online. The instructions are very clear and I believe an advanced beginner could successfully complete them. There are also instructions on how to enlarge the shawls if you have more yarn than is called for in the pattern. The smaller sizes take only a couple of evenings to complete but yield beautiful products.

Great photos, nice projects, and clear directions. The directions for reading a chart made it very easy for me to transition from only using written patterns to happily working charted patterns. I especially appreciate that many of these projects use only one skein of yarn, making these shawls both time and cost conscious.

This author does it right. She includes both, charts and written instructions for stitch patterns. Brava! I know a lot of people like and use charts. More power to them. I am of the other variety of knitter. I like written instructions and hate charts. This book does both, which is as it should be. I have been knitting all my life and I am an accomplished knitter. I have used a chart under duress, so it isn't that I don't know how to read a chart, it is that I don't want to read a chart. This book has some lovely projects and the instructions are clear and well written. I recommend this book to anyone looking for some lovely lacy projects.

I have to say how refreshing it is to buy something on Amazon on the basis of the cover and the title and get exactly what you thought you were getting. This is this book. You get 15 lace knitting shawls. The lace knitting is mostly for the border, and most of the patterns are simple enough to be an introduction to lace knitting to the intermediate knitter. The patterns are not crazy involved like some you see in more advanced patterns, yet they are very effective and pretty. The choice of "sock weight" yarns also makes a nice compromise between the really fine "lace weights" that take longer to knit and a little more dexterity to handle, but still makes pieces that aren't too bulky to give a lacy effect. Personally I prefer yarns with a little more drape than the high elasticity chosen by the author, but it would be quibbling to complain about it.The fifteen patterns are separated in the following categories: 5 patterns of triangular shawls with lacy borders, 5 patterns of triangular shawls with allover lace, 5 patterns of shawls with a variation in the shape (a half circle, a pointy stole, a bottom up triangle, a crescent, and something that looks a lot like a variation on a faroese shawl only with two more vertical panels). This last section is very nice, but it brings me to my only criticism of this book, it would have been better to have included either a diagram with the shape of the shawl for clarity's sake, or at least a photo showing the whole shape. As it is, you have to look at it from different angles and kind of infer how the whole thing looks once knitted up. The photos themselves are beautiful and of good quality. The technical sections are well to the point, and are well assorted to the material of the book. There are good photos of how to make a tab cast on, that might help anyone who couldn't pick it up from written instructions. Mostly, I think they are very appropriate with the skill level of the book and they look like they were made with the targeted reader in mind.Near perfection in a knitting book.

This is a great book to add to any knitters collection!! If you're new to lace knitting this is a great place to start. There is a good variety of patterns to choose from, the instructions are charted and written out clearly and each design is beautifully photographed. If you're an experienced knitter with a huge stash of sock yarns you wouldn't be dissapointed in the choice of patterns, there's not a bad one in this book! Really pleased I bought it and looking forward to starting a shawl, just can't decide which one to do first! Love the little addition to each pattern telling you how to make it bigger if you want. I cannot fault this book!!

Page 74 tab cast on is the basis to begin a triangular lace shawl. I love this style. You can continue with just the what it's call a yarn over basic shawl or get into the lace. I am knitting page 13 inflorescence shawl pattern. I have accumulated a lot of sock yarn, mostly cascade heritage, solid colors. I am using red for this shawl. I plan to use the 3 different blues in bands of color changes maybe 4 inches each light to dark like a colorwash. I am early in the category of intermediate knitter and feel this book a challenge yet possible. Starting in December knitting gifts for 2014 birthdays and Christmas. I am very pleased with the style this book is written in, easy to follow. Charts are written out, easier for Mr to do than the picture of a chart for me.Worth the investment. Worthy to be in your knitting collection.

This beautiful book for knitters is filled with shawl patterns that can be knit with sock yarns. If you're like me, you have tons of sock yarns in your stash and don't want to use all of it on socks. This provides a wonderful alternative for all that beautiful sock yarn. Most of the patterns require just one skein and that means you won't have to go out and spend a lot of money on new yarns. The patterns are both written out and charted, which works well for me as I prefer the written out patterns. This is a beautiful book and a wonderful addition to every knitter's library.
