The steel thread cutting screw has a zinc plating, a Type F point style, and a serrated hex washer head with a slotted drive. The type F point is suitable for heavy gauge sheet metal, aluminum, cast iron, brass, and plastic. The screw has machine screw threads that taper down to a blunt point with multiple cutting edges and chip cavities. Steel is often used in applications where strength is the primary consideration. The zinc plating offers corrosion resistance and has a reflective appearance. The hex washer head has six flat sides that a wrench can grip to turn from the side, enabling use when there is no space above the head for a screwdriver. The serrated flange acts like a washer to increase the fastener's bearing surface and distribute the clamping force over a larger area, providing a grip that resists loosening. The slotted drive has a linear slot for use with a flat-blade driver.
Thread cutting and thread rolling screws, two types of self-tapping screws, are threaded fasteners that create a mating thread in the wall of a hole. The two screws differ from each other in the way that they create the threads. Thread cutting screws cut the wall of the hole to create the thread, creating material chips that need to be cleared away from the hole to prevent clogging. Thread rolling screws, also called thread forming screws, do not remove material but instead press against the wall of the hole to displace the material and form the threads.

These are really nice 3/8-16 self tapping bolts that worked perfect for my project to bolt stabilizer bars to the bottom of an aluminum utility trailer. These aren’t available at Home Depot or Lowe’s (at least in this size) so it was awesome to get them from Amazon same day.

I needed these to attach a couple of tie downs to the bed of my truck. All I had to do was start a hole with a 1/4" drill, then I used a punch to open the hole a little larger until the head of the bolt just started. After that I was able to use a wrench to cut the threads. Easy peasy.

Recently, my preferred car wash place managed to completely rip the from license plate mount, and the plate, completely from the front bumper of my car. The hardware was just 1/4 inch sheet metal screws into a plastic bumper cover, but the fact that the front plate mount had been on there since 2004 made me a bit upset. Especially since the manager said it could have been like that when it got to the car wash place. Yep, I threw the plate and mount through the plexiglass shield so it would be found on the floor of the car wash to make them responsible. Anyway, I wanted something beefier to put the plate mount back on, and these bolts fit the bill. I simply drilled out the existing holes to accommodate the threading action of the bolts and used a cordless drill to put the plate mount back on. The bolts held very tightly, and I'm confident that, barring a major impact, that license plate mount is not coming off of there. Very happy with the quality!
