We live in the foothills of California. We have a small family of skunks that come to visit us in the summer. Our dog is always curious of them. He never hurts them, just wants to be friends with the cute, but stinky animals. He has been sprayed twice, this shampoo works wonders getting the smell out. Just make sure to put the shampoo on first, BEFORE adding any water. Water spreads the smell. We do shampoo first, rub in well, add more shampoo, then rinse. The spray is awesome for rugs and furniture.

This really works. If you have a dog that could get skunked you need this ready for emergency treatment. You will not regret it. Also look at the rinse version, not as an alternative but to finish the job.

My 3 dogs all got sprayed by a skunk. Ordered this, arrived the next day. Works great!! A bit of a smell but much better than skunk! Just pour it on & it removes almost all the smell. Highly recommended!!

I recommend this to everyone. Gentle and effective. Worked well for de skunking and worked well after dog rolled in something dead and foul. Also worked well after dog rolled in some nasty wild animal feces. Skunk off took the odor out of the dog fur and out of his collars!

I used the deodorizer, thoroughly saturating the spray area which is my dog’s snout, head, ears, throat and front legs per the instructions. I followed with the Skunk Out shampoo all over. Dog is now dry and her snout and head still smell like a skunk. There is also the smell of the product which doesn’t mix well with the skunk spray. I keep hearing that nothing will take away the smell except patience and time (30 days). This is her 3rd bath and the 3rd product. The 2nd product (not Skunk Out) worked better but she still stunk like a skunk. I also don’t like that the packaging does not list ingredients so I don’t know what I actually put on my dog.

We made it 12 years without getting sprayed by a skunk! My poor dog got sprayed right in the ear and on the face. I wish we had bought this that night so it would come faster, but unfortunately, we tried bathing her with other methods. When we finally found this it made a world of difference. The fragrance is not the best, but sure beats the smell of skunk, who also sprayed our house. We actually ended up using some of the shampoo on the house to get the skunk's oil off and it worked well. It’s a tiny bottle so use it sparingly, you don’t need much it’s pretty concentrated. I would highly recommend every dog owner keep this on hand. Our vet even sells it in their office.

First of all, if you are reading reviews for this product, I feel sorry for you. It really is a horrendous journey to embark on, but it will end...…..eventually. This is probably the worst thing I've had to endure besides childbirth. At least I had drugs for that. We have 2 dogs- both mutts. Our older dog is hound/terrier mix and is a stone cold killer of rats/possums, and now- skunks. My husband was out of town for work when he decided to kill a skunk in our backyard at 9 pm while I was attempting to wrangle my 5 year old to bed. Our other dog (whom we lovingly refer to as Tweedledum) of course is always in the mix and both dogs got sprayed. I had just let them out to pee before we all went to bed when the smell in my kitchen hit me like a ton of bricks. I knew immediately what had happened and started squawking and cursing in my head at the insurmountable ordeal that was ahead of me. Luckily the kitchen door was shut so they were not able to run in the house and make matters worse. If you have never experienced the smell of being sprayed, you will wish for the much lighter pleasant smell of a dead skunk on the side of a highway. My wonderful neighbor (whom I always call to remove the dead animals from my yard when my husband is gone) agreed to come over and help out. Once it was removed he asked what my plan was. No one has a plan ahead of time for this. I quickly googled and saw a concoction of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and dish soap. DO NOT GET YOUR DOG WET FIRST. Well, this may work to a certain degree (if you happen to have 4 cups of hydrogen peroxide laying around). I had about 1/2 cup and with what the neighbor brought over equaled 2 cups. Since it was 9 pm, no one was going to the store to get more. I would suggest wrapping your dog in a towel to take them to the shower if you can't shower them outside so that they do not touch anything. I put both of them in the walk in shower off of our bedroom and shut all the doors. (They have not figured out they can push on the door of the shower to get out -----yet. But with my luck, that night would have been the night the lightbulb went off over their heads.) By the time I mixed up my scanty 1/2 volume shampoo recipe and went back up to the bathroom, it was unbearable. The smell in our bathroom was unlike anything I can ever describe. Over a week later, it still stinks in the shower. The smell in the house was also unbearable, and I was afraid our nanny would quit when she came to our house the next day. After a week of washing the dogs with that recipe and still feeling like Pepe (or Puppy) Le Pew was living in our home I called our vet for some recommendations. They recommended this shampoo. My husband washed both dogs last night with it and IT WORKS. Now, the smell of the shampoo isn't great- but it's better than the hell you've already been living in. What I've learned from this (and hopefully will help others) is:1.Have this on hand (too late most likely, but we will ALWAYS have it on hand from now on). I am fairly confident that our dog has NOT learned a valuable life lesson from this event.2. Remove their collars outside and leave them outside. You will be throwing the collars away. Wrap the dogs in a towel to carry them to the shower. You will be throwing this towel away, so use a crappy one you have lying around.3.Cover all your furniture with old sheets/blankets if you allow you dog to sit/lay on furniture before you let them out of the shower. I removed all the back cushions and pillows and put them in a closed spare bedroom as well.4. Have a gallon (or more) of vinegar on hand to get the smell out of your house (I placed a cup of vinegar in a bowl in each room and this really helped remove the smell.) I also read to boil vinegar in a pan to help.5. Soak the clothes you were wearing while dealing with the ungodly situation in a bucket of vinegar for at least a day to get the smell out.6. Try to put vinegar/bleach/lye down your shower drain to help get rid of the smell.Yes, you will smell when you go to work the next day. It permeates everything. Any clothing/jackets you have hanging out not in a drawer or closet will stink. Everything will need to be washed. We used the spray to soak the dog tags and rabies tags in as they also still smelled after soaking in vinegar for a week, and they are good as new now!Good luck!!!!!!!

My dog got sprayed in the face (mainly nose and eyes) by a skunk late at night, I was panicking bathing him trying to get rid of the smell. Peroxide, baking soda, Sunlight dish soap, vinegar and tea tree oil helped very slightly...With one day shipping, the bottle was delivered to my house the next morning. Unfortunately, the lid on the bottle was defective and a lot of the product had leaked.I used a small amount from what was left in the bottle, and applied on my dogs face and rinsed him off. Smelled his face, and certain spots (where I actually applied the shampoo) had ZERO skunk smell!I realized I had just missed a few spots and that I needed to actually scrub him with it so I tried again with what was left in the bottle, and really scrubbed it in. The smell vanished! The skunk smell is only on his legs where I was unable to bathe him as I didn’t have any shampoo left, due to the defective lid on the bottle. I will update when the new bottle arrives and I bathe my dog again :)Too long didn’t read version:The shampoo works amazing! Just make sure you really scrub it into your pets fur, and get all the areas they were sprayed or the smell will remain in certain areas you missed.

I ordered this product instead of a similar product called Skunk Off by Thronell because it qualified for Prime 2 day shipping, I was set to begin moving from TX to AZ in less than a week and needed the product to arrive ASAP in time for me to thoroughly bath my dog. Based on reviews I really wanted the Thornell product because my dog had been sprayed a week prior to me purchasing the shampoo and I had washed her with numerous other products and the reviews said that product would still work. So I am basing my opinion on those elements: speed of delivery, and its effectiveness considering the previous use of other products(a tomato paste bath and a concoction of dish soap, hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice).First off it was delivered so quickly- 2 days and with free shipping!!! Very pleased because like I said the other product required the usually 5 day delivery... and when your dog smells like a skunks bum you want freedom from it as soon as possible.Second: My husband used 1/4 of the bottle on our Lab focusing on her face, shoulders and chest. Immediately once she was done she still reeked of skunk. We let her fully dry and it got better but the stench was still enough to drive us mad. Please keep in mind we bathed her days before with other products so it wasn't as strong as it could be but the smell was still lingering. The next day I bathed her again with this shampoo, using the rest of the bottle and working it into her skin and covering her whole body. This time so much better! The aroma is not completely gone but 1 out of 10 with 1 being completely gone its a 2. That I will take.My opinion: I dont know if this product requires a full bottle to be used for effectiveness, if it will only work if it's the one and only wash you use immediately after your dog gets sprayed or if my husband was a dodo bird and should have just washed her whole body with it in the first place... but I still want to try the Thornell product. This isn't the first time my dog has been sprayed and I assume not the last so I will be trying out the other product next. But still 4 stars for this stuff because it did end up working and maybe the problem wasn't the product but the applier.
