I bought this for my daughter and am so disappointed. She loves playing with her dad’s synthesizer’s so I thought this would be a perfect tool for her. Instead of turning the knobs and being able to make her own music turning the knobs does really nothing. I feel like I could have bought something better for $10 instead of spending the $100’s I did on this. Don’t waste your money if you are looking for a toy for your child to understand cause and effect and making music.

Bought our blipblox about 5 years ago and it remains one of our favorite toys. Appropriate for all ages - babies, elders and everyone inbetween. It is sturdy and high quality. Noisy. Colorful. Highly interactive. Plays nice with other gear if you are so inclined, though it is optimized as a stand-alone instrument/toy.I enthusiastically recommend this awesomeness to everyone. It is an excellent value toy that won't get lost or forgotten about as your child/spouse matures.

Nothing near as described. Was second rate and worth $50 at most. Buyer beware, this is not as advertised.

I wanted to get my son (4) something to share my love of music and synths. The Blipbox SK2 is ticking all the boxes: sequencer with sequences, impressive high bitrate digital engine, lots of modulation, good amount of knobs, flashy lights, and a synth wave color scheme. It’s an impressive piece of tech and not a “toy” An amalgamation of fisher price design to capture a small child’s imagination and full-fledged synths with midi and a 1/4 inch jack. Good stuff. Highly recommend!Pros:-Captures kid's attention and introduces them to sound design with zero required knowledge of music theory and sound design concepts.-Can sound clean and smooth to gritty and wild.-Real gear for kiddos. It has midi and a 1/4 out!-Solid digital synth engine.-Kids and adults can enjoy this.Cons:-To understand a lot of the features, you have to read the manual. I wish there were a diagram and combo sheet on the back.-Front plastic was scuffed and scratched as if it had been used and returned already. I know this is for kids and will likely not remain mint, but for $200 I was hoping it would come out of the box looking fresh. See photo of example.

Really love the idea of this product and might get another, hopefully not-faulty, unit. Unfortunately mine malfunctioned in a concerning way after only 10 minutes of use. I used the provided AA batteries and used the unit with my kid for about 10 minutes then turned it off. After sitting off/idle we went to play with it again, but the back/battery area was extremely hot to the touch. Concerned about continued increase in heat I carefully removed the backing and batteries with a plastic tool (the batteries were extremely hot as well). It appears as though the batteries expanded since they were a little difficult to pry out and the wrapping was ripped down the seam. The unit cooled down after batteries were removed. The unit still powered up when directly plugged in after some more testing, but there were noticeable artifacts in the sound like a popping. Returning for a refund.

After reviewing the various "kid-friendly" synths on the market I purchased the BlipBlox SK2 for my two-year old (and - let's be honest - for myself). They've put a lot of effort into making a synthesizer with powerful features as easy to use as possible. This is a small company trying to build a really cool product - I left this review to encourage others to support innovative products like this (and to help as you do your own research; at this price-point you are probably doing some research).Pros:+ Well-built for kids. This has been thrown down the stairs a couple times without issue. I'm sure it would break eventually in the hands of a truly destructive toddler, but this thing has taken some abuse and still works fine. I don't think it could handle liquids being poured on/in it.+ Turn it on and go. You don't need to know how to "start with a square wave and increase the attack then chain the frequency modulator", etc. You just turn it on and start playing. Honestly I use this a lot - you can create a 'pretty good' sample in + Intuitive layout. Your kid will figure this out pretty quick. The levers and knobs are easy. If you're accustomed to using a real (adult) synth then some things may feel different (levers vs knobs / sliders) and you might get frustrated that certain things like switching or chaining oscillators is not obvious, but read the docs and you'll figure it out.+ No cords. There are no cords to trip on or tear out when your kids picks it up and walks off with it. This can be plugged in to wall-power or to an amp/output if you want. But it runs on batteries and is completely self-contained. This is awesome for taking it the car. Try letting your kid play with your real synths and see how that goes :-)+ Preset beats, quick change. The BlipBlox comes with 400+ beats so you can really just turn this on and jam. If you don't like the current setting, press one button to shift to another beat, and press another button to randomize the synth settings to shape a new sound. This is probably the *key feature* that is fun for my kid. No knowledge required about synth mechanics.+ MIDI. With the MIDI connection you really can hook this up to your keyboard (and other synth tools) and build some awesome sounds. You can also use a MIDI data cable to upload new beats and synth options using the Blipblox website.+ Advanced features. This really is a powerful synth setup. It's a good gateway for newbies into the weird world of synthesizers (for any age), and for advanced users you'll be surprised what you can do with it.+/- BlipBlox is supposed to be for kids 3+. That seems accurate. I would say that my 2-year old will now play with this thing for ~2 minutes, turn it off, go away and do something else for 15 minutes, then come back and turn it on for 2 minutes... you get the idea. Sometimes she likes to turn it on and just leave it on while she plays, like a monotonous EDM soundtrack to go along with her playtime. Buying this for a kid under 3 means you (the adult) really just wanted it for yourself (yes, guilty).Cons:- Price. It's cheap relative to other synths with the same features, but it is definitely a high price for a 'toy'.- Documentation / Presets. There are a LOT of features in this synth, but to access them you have to read the manual carefully and push/hold lots of different buttons. For example, to set the max volume output (great for little kids with headphones) you hold two buttons while using the pitch lever to adjust the volume knob to set the max output. You would never figure this out without the manual (available on their website under "Learning Toolbox").-Loops, recordings, multi-track etc. This is a synth only. If you want to record something, add new tracks, create editable loops, or most other advanced features you will need additional hardware and related data connections. Side note: If you really want to do these things and you're looking at buying a 'kids synth' then you probably already own those tools anyway.Bottom Line:The SK2 is unique in that you can give this to a young kid and they just ‘get it’ - you can just sit on the couch and jam. From what I've found, this is the best way to introduce a kid to the world of synthesizers and electronic beats that will grow with their skills. It's not cheap, but it's also not cheap when your kid "plays" with your thousand-dollar synth. As Ferris Bueller says, "if you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up."
