I have used a cheaper set that cost me about $20 for a few years and needed another set to carry on my service truck. I went with this set for almost twice the price because it was supposed to be "premium" and some of the Shars tools are pretty decent. I have to say that I'm a little disappointed with the quality as some of these have a rough movement of the sliding plungers, more so than any on my old "cheap" set. I may contact Shars directly and see if they will exchange at least the rough ones. Kind of wish now I had just spent the extra dough for the Mititoyo set and been done with it.

I should probably contact Shars before writing this review, but here's what I received. I like Shars...good company, generally good-to-great products. This one falls in the good/ok category. Nobody should expect top quality telescoping gauges at this price point, so expect to have to do a little touch-up or live with some small irritations in use. That is especially true of the cheapest versions out there and these are much better in some ways but still in need of improvement (by you, if not by China). The finish is nicely done although one had some spotting on it, knurls are clean and grippy enough while being somewhat flat. Everything is straight, threads are well cut, and the ends are nicely polished (a big plus), decent spring inside, everything nice and oily. Some of mine work very smoothly, a couple are slightly gritty but ok, and maybe the most important to me, the "E" in the 3" range, is really bad. I'll see if I can address things with some needle files and stones - usually that works just great - and won't bug Shars for a replacement unless I have to. Overall these are worth buying and it's clear that an attempt has been made to provide something better than the junk-junk that is out there, but still expect to cope with some touch-ups. The case is a nice one although a little fiddly to open with each clip inside being reversed (one goes up, one goes down)...might be frustrating and easy to break if you aren't aware of that at first. I'd gladly pay a few bucks more for a more assured "premium" set of these without having to spend the bigger coins on other brands. Most other Shars products I have or have used have really been quite nice.Update: I contacted Shars and they were kind enough to send a free replacement for the gitchy one. I offered to return the old one to them but they said that wasn't necessary. The replacement is very smooth as it should be....much appreciated.
