I purchased this as a piece of decor/ display to complement the old timey nautical theme I was going for in my living room. I’m not sure on how functional this really is but it sure looks like it is. I’m very happy with this item and would gladly recommend it for your office or living space for some cool to look at.

I did not buy this to navigate the Seas, but to learn how a Sextant FUNCTIONS and to practice navigation! This unit was anything but Functional! I paid a little bit extra in hopes of getting an instrument that was useful! Wrong! The quality of finish was very good, but the mechanics sucked! The Tangent worm screw would not engage the gear rack on right side of arc enough to hold in place when tipped! had to modify stop on that side to get it to hold! Frame was shallow on right side of Arc or Pivot point was not drilled properly! Telescope and mirrors were not even close! Wrapped in Bubble wrap and stuffed in a shipping box! From India! Also one of the teeny tiny screws was laying in bottom of Box! Luckily!Bottom line, if ya want something to play with that is functional, make another choice than I did!

This is a real sextant, not a toy. I have wanted one for along time and finally bought one.As I do not live near a coast line, it will be some time to actually use it, so I can not comment on the accuracy, but it looks like it is very accurate.The one draw back is that is did not come with any instructions.Overall I am very pleased with it.
