I've never owned those vintage steam trunks so I can't compare in terms of sturdiness and quality but I still love the classic look. It's lightweight so I can't imagine it taking too much abuse like airline travel. I just use it as decorative storage but I like it having wheels to relocate it. I don't know if it's normal but I DON'T like the wheels being exposed on the inside of the trunk, things could get tangled!

My son took this brand-new trunk to camp, and he used it for all of 8 days before both hinges completely fell off. I imagine he was not using it gingerly, but it should have been able to withstand less than 2 weeks of opening and closing!
