I love these, easy to use and seem pretty sturdy. I followed the instructions and dug a hole first instead of shoving them into the dirt (I read a review that said they broke them doing that).

This is the fifth set I’ve ordered for myself & others. Love the functionality. Sometimes they are broken in transit but company has been great about replacing quickly.

They worked very well in watering my plants while I was gone!

The thickness of the clay is a good balance between porosity and sturdiness. I gave it a 3 because, to fully use the weeping component of the clay, I buried the spike and the plastic bottle completely into the dirt. This allowed the water to disperse more fully while hiding the plastic bottle. For this to work, I needed to waterproof the rim of the spike where it meets the bottle and, further, to put a hole in the bottom of the bottle. I filled the bottle and spike with water using the hole. The spikes use would have been easier if the spike was longer.

We made a raise garden bed and usually grow simple things like tomatoes and beans. The spikes seems best for plants that have a single large root system. So it works great for tomatoes and zucchinis. A 3/4 bottle of water will last a good 4-5 days. Seems like it's great for conserving water and not having to water every day. So far all 6 spikes I received held up and didn't break.

I have two sets of these now at home, and we're using them all over the yard. One caution, learned the hard way: follow the directions carefully. Use a hand-shovel and dig the hole, push the spike in carefully, and put the bottle in afterwards. I wanted to put a watering spike below our tomato plant which was surrounded by a tomato cage making the dirt hard to reach with two hands and a shovel. So I decided to save myself work by just putting the bottle into the watering spike and using the bottle to push the spike into the dirt. I broke the spike. Follow the directions! I did it the right way for the remaining spikes without incident, and they're watering each of our vegetable plants beautifully. I bought the second set of spikes when we purchased a small tree for the parkway near the sidewalk, and my husband felt uncomfortable putting the usual glass wine bottles so close to the street and sidewalk. These spikes don't work with plastic bottles (the bottles collapse as the liquid gets sucked out), but the spikes work GREAT with metal water bottles. I bought some for cheap at a thrift store, and they're watering our tree very nicely.

I was surprised to find out that these kept my plants sufficiently watered over 1 week. If you are buying these because you will be out of the house for some period of time, I suggest you purchase these in advance so you can test them to see how many you might need for a larger plant. These are too fragile to pound in the ground so make a hole which is sufficient to hold the stake.

These did not work for my intended purpose. They are great for cactus & suclents but only if it is right next to your plant. They are plain but when you add a bottle it is very visible and without a lot of creativity not very attractive. I have had several break. One as a result of a bottle being stuck in it( it broke in half when I tried to pull the bottle out. A couple others when the bottle dropped too hard after a refill. Over all this product is ok. You really can't set the bar too high with terra-cotta.
