About this item

  • Appearance: Cucamelons, or "Mexican sour gherkins," are tiny, grape-sized fruits that look like miniature watermelons, featuring a green skin with white stripes.
  • Growth Habit: This perennial vine in its native tropical climates often grows as an annual in cooler regions, sprawling over supports and can reach lengths of 5 to 6 feet, making it ideal for trellises and A frames.
  • Culinary Uses: Cucamelons are eaten raw, typically picked when they're young and tender. They have a crisp texture with a flavor that combines cucumber and lime, making them a unique addition to salads, pickles, or as a snack.
  • Cultivation: They require full sun and well-drained soil, with regular watering. Cucamelons are relatively easy to grow, making them suitable for home gardens, and they benefit from companion planting with corn or beans.
  • Quality: All Cucamelon seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.
  • Packets: Each seed packet displays an artful illustration of the variety to be grown, as well as detailed seed sowing information on the reverse side. They measure 3.25" wide by 4.50" tall.
  • Promise: Seed Needs will never knowingly supply GMO based seed products. The vast majority of our seeds are open pollinated & heirloom, with the exception of a few hybrids.
  • Germination: Seed Needs packets contain some of the freshest seed available. Direct from the growers. If sown correctly, you will begin seeing results in only a matter of days.
  • Freshness: All Cucamelon seeds are packaged in tear resistant and moisture resistant packaging. This keeps the seeds a whole lot fresher than the competitions selection!

Cucamelon (Melothria scabra), also known as Mexican sour gherkin or mouse melon, produces fruits that resemble miniature watermelons in appearance but taste like a blend of cucumber and lime. These fruits are highly versatile in culinary applications; they can be eaten fresh, added to salads for a tangy crunch, or pickled for a unique gherkin-like snack. To grow cucamelons, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost, ensuring the soil temperature stays between 70°F to 85°F for germination. Once the risk of frost has passed, plant them outside in a sunny, well-drained spot with rich, humus-rich soil. Cucamelons require support to climb, so providing a trellis or similar structure is essential. They are relatively drought-resistant and pest-resistant but thrive with regular watering and light fertilization during the growing season. Harvesting can begin 60-70 days after planting when the fruits are about the size of grapes.

Bought this item last year grew really well. Fruit tasted amazing. Took about 10 days to germinate and good viable seeds.

I’ve been wanting cucamelons since i saw them on tiktok last summer, it was too late to start them from seed so I waited until this spring/summer to grow them. Patience is key but overall I’m very pleased with the results of these seeds! Almost every seed germinated but I ended up having 4 plants to make it to be planted (mostly my fault because I left seedlings in the sun too long one day). You don’t really need a lot anyway because these 4 are taking over my entire trellis and have lots on them!I’m in zone 7aMarch 14: started seeds indoors, taking them out for sun/heat every few daysMay 4: planted 4 plants in garden, on an automatic sprinkler systemJune 17: got the first batch of cucamelons!

Might be me, I planted both packs, in the Home Depot small seed starter kits. Cardboard looks like egg cartons with the potting soil. Put in greenhouse. Nothing. Maybe too hot, wrong time of year. I'm in Florida. I'm going to try again as a winter vegetable. I tried on January.

I bought these for my daughter who is six and we actually had to return them. So as far as value for money, absolutely none. They would have been fun to grow but since they sprouted and then immediately wilted all three times we tried them unfortunately they were very disappointing to her and us. So just to share how we grew them. Three different ways. The first time we grew them by putting soil and little pots and putting the seeds in. The second time we tried putting them in seed starter again same thing sprouted and wilted. The third time we put them in pre-made seedling pods the kind that you have to put in water to get it to expand. Kept them on our porch and water them regularly kept them out of direct sunlight with just enough Sun according to instructions. The package size was fine and it would have been great if they had actually sprouted and grown. I definitely would not recommend this from this site unfortunately. I will be buying these again from another website that specializes in seeds. And hopefully they will do better. As a side note we are in Southwest Florida zone 10.

I got these May 2022. I didnt have much luck the first year i grew them. High wind, scorching sun and dry conditions were not good for this type of plant. Using those same seeds I tried again this year and they are flourishing! I have them in shade for most of the day and they get the evening direct sun. I keep soil moist at all times, and being in the shade makes that easy to keep damp. They are exploding with vines and need alot of room to climb. They take almost 2 weeks to germinate, and for the first month they don't grow much. It was discouraging, but with patience they will get established and take off. They are a beautiful vine and they have the cutest little fruits. Not much for taste, but they have a good crunch.

Great seeds! Great fruit! I live in central coastal California. We have cooler summers with fog, and a warm sunny late summer and well into fall. I planted these seeds a little later than the rest of my garden and they did great. It took longer than expected to germinate but they all came up well. It is a beautiful little vine with cute yellow flowers. I built a trellis about 30” x. 30” and it was perfect. We had fruit for many months. As with any fruit, harvest before they get too big or the skin will be tough. My family enjoyed these very much. I am ordering more seeds for this season. I highly recommend these seeds!
