We installed these black plastic oar sleeves on our 7-ft-long West Marine wooden oars and are using 2 1/4 inch oar locks. We're using them on a 14-ft aluminum skiff. Seems like a good fit.

They fit a "Stanadard" 1.5" to 1.75" wooden oars. If they are too big, you can trim them ( I use a table saw). If you don't want to trim the collars, then you can build up the oar. In the past people would cut up a bike innertubes and slide it over the oar then fit the collars, it adds a little cushion to the stoke. I have used epoxy and a few wraps of fiberglass tape to add some thickness to the oars, works well and looks nice. Too stiff? heat the collar in an oven or boils them, a heat gun can also work. They are tough for a reason.

I've found it frustrating that oars for sale online seldom specify their diameter and that these oarlock shields don't specify the oar diameter they are designed to fit. They have some size flexibility but are MUCH too big for 1" diameter oars. Cutting off excess works for the thinner more flexible part of the shield but the thick collar isn't flexible and has to be partially cut in several places to allow it to wrap snugly around a 1" oar.

These collars cannot be easily fit to an oar that has a smaller diameter. I purchased them with oars and oarlocks as offered by Amazon. After trying various tools to make them smaller, finally gave up. My oars were 1 3/8 diameter and the collars were far too big. I am left with useless/worthless plastic.

Ok,so I bought the oars, the oar locks and now I needed the oar collar to make it all work together! They were actually a little big for the oars, but I think they'll work fine.

Have purchased four sets of Scotty's locks and collars.Easy to install and supremely durable.Found no need for nails tape is enough.My oars are 1 1/4 in diameter. Just inserted a piece of 1 1/2 i.d. plastic plumbing pipe as a filler.

As noted in a previous review, these needed to be cut down to fit oars under 1 5/8 inch. My oars are 1 1/2 inches. With a fine blade on a band saw, cutting was trivial. It would have been slightly more challenging with a hand saw. A fine tooth blade (like a Japanese pull saw) would probably do it well.Large screw hose clamps held the collars in place for trial. The worked well in the Scotty Oarlocks which claim a 1 3/4 opening. I still need to get oar stoppers and eventually to modify the collars and oar locks to give precise angular positioning for the stroke and feather (return) positions.It would help if the product descriptions for oars, collars, and stops would all give the relevant dimensions.
