Best Quality Samue

Samue, loose-fitting cotton kimono-style top and trouser sets, are top-quality traditional Japanese casual and leisure wear. This model is made in the city of Kurume, renowned for its high-quality fabrics and clothes. Unlike cheaper brands that are made overseas and post-dyed, this samue is woven from the best hand-dyed cotton. The pants have pockets on both sides, an elasticated waist, with ties around the waist and ankles. The top has a pocket on the left side. The model in the photo is 179cm tall and wearing an X-Large size.

Samue have been worn as work clothes by artists, potters, priests and sculptors for centuries. These days they are very popular as comfortable everyday wear.

I wanted something like a martial arts gi, but that I could just wear for stretching, yoga, or hanging around the house in. This is great. It came ironed and packaged neatly. It fits me perfectly and is very comfortable. It's too nice to wear for working around the house and garden as they are commonly used in Japan. I'm sure in Japan they are a lot cheaper hehe.Bottom line I'm glad I bought it and I'm very happy with it.

I had not found comfortable pyjamas in 60 years; always too restrictive or too hot. These breath and have nothing that irritates me during the night. I’m going to buy some more to wear around the house now that I’m retired!

I have a Japanese garden in which I spend a lot of time as it is relaxing. I have been looking for a Samue (jacket and trousers) for relaxing around the house and also for light garden work. This Samue set (made by Watanosato in Japan) is very well made and quite confortable. I am quite happy with it.

Super fast on the shipping date. Ordered it less than a week ago and got it in 5 days time. (Said it was supposed to come in between 2-4 weeks.)Material and stitching is great. No fraying stitches or any type of cheaper fabric used. Sizing for the pants and top fits really accurate in description. Accommodates many sizes. The pants are a bit long and that isn’t the manufacturer’s fault. Unfortunately that is due to my athletic build and genetics. My torso is a bit longer, muscular thicker thighs than most average people, and my legs are shorter compared to the median. So most pants don’t fit normally unless they stretch. But with some alterations about 1.5” is fine.

This is a very nicely made, comfortable samugi and a great value. Many samugi cost significantly more. In addition, I was very pleasantly surprised when mine arrived - from Japan, no less - in just a few days. The fabric is 100% cotton and is nice and soft. The cut is perfectly roomy but not so big as to get in the way. I use mine for morning zazen followed by gardening and yard chores. It's so comfy that I ordered a second set.As for sizing, I wavered between a medium and a large, and ultimately went with the large. I'm glad I did. I am 5'9", weigh 160 lbs, with a 40" chest and a 32" waist and a 31" inseam. I have an athletic frame. The large fit very well right out of the bag, with the legs being just a tad on the long side (but they have ankle tie-strings so not a problem). I ran it through the wash with hot water and then the dryer on high and it shrank the perfect amount and now fits even better. Shrinkage was fairly minimal, and that's all I needed, but be aware that you likely won't get a great fit if you order way too big and expect to shrink-to-fit later. Order the size you need, understanding that the sizing is Japanese sizing, which is about one size smaller than American sizing.

In US shirt sizes I typically wear extra-large or double extra-large depending on whether I want it to be loose. I'm 5' 9" 215 pounds and work out. I was more concerned this samue would be long so unlike most reviewers, I had to order biggest size I could get to have any chance of having the shoulders and chest fit and then made every effort to shrink this thing to length. The first time I washed it in hot water and ran it through the dryer on High. I ordered this in Japanese Size XXXL. It's an almost perfect fit following my efforts to shrink it. Incidentally, this is very much like a martial arts Gi with several exceptions. A Gi has a diamond shaped piece of fabric in the crotch called a gusset which will allow more freedom of leg movement. This samue does not have that but the pants are quite comfortable regardless. Unlike a Gi, the jacket has a small pocket (shown in the picture) and there are additionally two pants pockets on either side. The ankles have drawstrings. The waist is elastic and additionally has a drawstring to secure it. The pants have a button opening and zippered fly

It's great, except for the fact that the stitching on the inside of the crotch is coming undone. It doesn't machine wash well. Needs to be hand washed. Other than that, it's great. I really enjoy using it to lounge in. Samue are great for any lounging activity, and great for me especially since these are also the working clothes used by the school of Buddhism I am becoming ordained in. Great product! Wash gently, wear enthusiastically!

This is my second-favorite samue ever -- and considering that my favorite cost $300 and came from a tiny shop in Japan, this one is hard to beat.I've traveled to Japan many times and picked up several samue over the years. Most of those have been the thick and heavy hemp variety -- e.g., like the cheap ones at Narita duty free if you've seen those. This product is NOT like those; the material is lightweight and very comfortable. This is a big advantage for sitting in particular -- such as sitting Zen -- because it does not have such thick seams and ankle areas. In addition to the superb comfort, there were two nice surprises with the pants: they have two front pockets and a zipper. As for sizing, I'm 5'8 and 145 lbs and the Medium size fits perfectly. It has held up well in the wash so far, but I will not machine dry it. It is light enough to dry overnight when hung on hangers after a machine wash. The one downside, I suppose, is that it is not really the right material to do heavy work such as yard work (which is when I wear the thick and tough hemp kind). This is more for housework, meditation, cooking, going to the hot springs (I wish!), substitute for pajamas, and so forth. I don't do martial arts but it seems like it should work for that.I love it and plan to order some more of the supplier's products -- after this good purchase with Amazon Prime, I may try some of their shipped-from-Japan items.

This is a great outfit for casual ware! It's very comfortable, fit no problem(XL, i'm 6'3 @250) and if feels like it will not fall apart anytime soon! Granted, i'm not a seamstress, BUT I do recognize quality and this doesn't feel cheap! I've warn this to casual dinners, and even during gigs while drumming! Everyone says it looks really cool and comfy! And I tell them, yep! :)
