A set of gas charged struts help automatically raise the hood, increasing safety by avoiding the need to mess with the prop rod or rest the hood on the front windshield. An "RCX" branded mounting bracket rests firmly in the center of the hood, helping to facilitate the opening and closing process while giving a killer look to an otherwise barren area. This kit is incredibly easy to install, taking as little as 10 minutes. A handy extra you'll wonder how you ever did without!

My TJ came to me with no hood prop, so it's been mildly annoying to have to flip it all the way up onto the top of the windshield every time I need to get under the hood. RC doesn't have the best reputation among Jeep tinkerers (mostly for having inexpensive lift kits that aren't great), but I hoped that something as basic as gas struts to hold up a hood would be okay.As it turned out, this product is decent and I'm glad I got it. The instructions are fairly clear and the rest of it you can figure out yourself. It was very helpful having a step-bit for my drill that could cut sheet metal easily. The TJ hood has a sheet-metal ridge running down the center of the interior side of the hood, and that's what you need to drill through to attach the mounting plate that comes with this kit. The risk of not having a step bit is that you might punch through the inner layer and accidentally also through the outer layer, making a hole all the way through the hood. You can also mitigate this with a block of wood but it's hard to get it in place, whereas a step bit is easy.Once the drilling is done, the rest is pretty easy. It's a bit awkward to attach the gas struts to the installed mounting hardware (you need to hold the hood up and hold the gas strut in place and pop it onto the mounting hardware, all at the same time) but it's doable.I have had the engine-side mounting brackets rotate a bit and that caused the gas struts to pop off of them, but that happed while I was lifting the hood (not when the engine was running) and it was pretty easy to put them back and tighten things down. All in all, money well spent. I really like having the automatic hood prop.

We have 2 Jeep TJ's. One with this kit and one without. I put the kit on my daily driver and I must say, WOW! I love how easy the hood is to open now. I was missing the hood prop and had to lay the hood on the windshield every time I needed it opened. Now I just unlatch and lift slightly and the shocks do the rest. I do recommend. It is also easy to unsnap the shocks if you need the hood back all the way. I love this and do recommend!

This kit is a great investment for the Jeepers. I love not having to deal with the hot hood pole when opening the hood after a drive. If you follow the instruction carefully the installation is not too bad. Drilling the holes and getting the nut/backers in the correct spot was a little uncomfortable/difficult. Once done, it is well worth it. I love this hydraulic hood assist feature!

This kit is junk. The struts themselves are trash. One strut dosent rebound and the other won't compress. On top of that they constantly pop off the ball mounts, would be better off with making your own hood struts. Can't give low enough rating

Once installed, the Jeep TJ Hood Lift Assist Kit works flawlessly on my 2000 Wrangler. But the reasons that it doesn’t get five stars is poor quality control. The included flag nuts were not centered on the hole in the “flag” before welding, so the 5/16” x 3/4” bolts would no go through. I ended up using a drill and a tap to alter them enough to work on the center hood bracket. The 4-5/16” lock nuts were not included. The nuts that were in the package were too big for the mounting studs. I ended up running to a hardware store to purchase the four nuts that should have been included.I have a lot of Rough Country products on my Jeep that I am very pleased with, I hope they put a little more effort into the parts and packaging of their hood lift kit.

Product came with wrong size bolts for ball bolt but that was a easy fix after a quick hardware run, After installation product worked great! If you have a old TJ you are probably tired of opening and closing your hood but this makes it a breeze!

The kit itself is pretty good. It all arrived on time and well packed. Despite it being really chilly in the garage, I decided to go ahead and install it.Instructions could use a little work. Pictures aren't the clearest and they did say "Use drill X" in the text but the picture says "Use drill Y" (as others have mentioned). You also have to use a little deduction to figure out which way the supports on the grill support rods go. All in all though, it's a pretty easy job. Product-wise...4 to 4.5 stars. Now the first time I shut my hood, there was a strange pop and clatter. I raised the hood and the passenger side gas strut had popped from it's support at the bottom. I examined the strut and found the plastic bit retaining the clip was broken. Needless to say I was disappointed. I called Rough Country and asked if they could just send me a replacement strut instead of taking it all back off and returning it through Amazon. The CSR asked me to email him a pic of the strut. Shortly thereafter I got an email of an invoice showing them shipping a gas strut. What I received was a whole new kit! So >BOOM

I am now wondering why Jeep did not install this on my 2004 TJ at the factory.. It’s a great product. It works just as advertised. I watched RC’s video three times and read the instructions several times. You must pay attention to details and study the photos as well. I would say it took me about an hour to round up tools, install, and put things away. I would have finished much sooner but I had trouble holding onto the flag nuts while attempting to screw the bolt through the hood bracket onto the hood. The tools needed list shows a 11/32" drill bit. Step 4 tells you to use a 5/16” bit. It really did not matter, I used the 5/16" that I had both in step 1 and 4, and it worked. The quality of the product and being able to have the hood lift up on its own makes the price very reasonable. Thank you Rough Country.
