I have these used out in the garden to monitor soil temperatures on tarped beds and these thermometers work great, are easy to read and accurate. A very worth it purchase.

No need to get more expensive as these are just as good. As long as you push in by stem I can see these lasting a long time. Dial is clear and digits very easy to read. I purchased 2 and both are less than half of a degree different and matched other ones I have. Out of dirt matched the other air one’s temps. So accuracy is also good enough to me. About 3 seconds to stabilize in dirt direct from air temp, so quick. Nice to have a spare for less than what one costs of others.

Using this device, I can accurately see what the ground temperature is of my yard is. it is important NOT to use certain herbicides on grass until the ground temperature is 70 or less for 5 days. This thermometer will help you not to make a mistake in early application of sod herbicide. The 5 days is something I read somewhere and so far has proven a reliable measure. This thermometer is excellent for checking that. I would recommend calibrating it by placing in a glass of ice water and seeing that the thermometer shows 32 degrees, the same as the ice water. This can be adjusted with a little nut at the base of the thermometer.

I like my soil thermometer, but I wan not prepared to do the calibration. I followed the directions but was not able to adjust the reading because I could not budge the nut. So I simply add 5 degrees to my reading which corresponds to the reading I get while in the ice to reach 32 degrees.Other than that, It is a handy tool!

Once calibrated this maintained accuracy throughout the scale. At first I was having trouble, but I was not inserting the tip far enough to get an accurate reading.There is a dimple on the side of the stem which is the minimum insertion length to get an accurate reading. If you do not have it this far inserted, the temperature will read low and be very slow to respond. It works well for its intended purpose of inserting a deep into soil for a accurate reading.I was using it in a liquid that was changing level. When it dropped below the minimum insertion length the temperature would read lower.For the price, I will not return this and keep it. I'm sure it will come in handy for some application in the future.
