The device works as advertised. While the app is a little cumbersome (just very cluttered), it works well to record and graph your extractions based on your recipe. Overall, it’s helped me not only to dial in my coffee, but also my taste for coffee. As a novice espresso making, it confirmed that my brew was under/over extracted during the dialing in process. That being said, I usually go by taste now and only use the device when I’m really stumped or for when I’m roasting, to confirm what I’m tasting is from the roasting process versus brewing process.TL;DR it’s helpful for dialing in your brew and taste.

The R2 Extract combo is an incredible set to take your coffee to new heights. The refractometer is easy to use and I was able to easily get accurate readings with my pourover brews. The readings seemed coherent with what I was tasting in the cup and reflected the changes I made to grind size, temperature, and pouring style. Very impressive! The scale is super accurate and extremely fast. The integrated flow rate display makes it easy to track your pouring and agitation for pourovers, or when doing pressure or flow profiling with espresso.Bluetooth and app integration is excellent and very easy using iOS. I was able to configure both devices using the DiFluid Cafe app, but I really only use them within the excellent Beanconqueror app that I have been using for well over 2 years now. Both devices integrate perfectly with Beanconqueror and I was soon looking at incredibly detailed flow/weight graphs while also adding the extraction yield to each brew.In summary -- if you are looking to truly explore your brews and go deep into coffee science, the R2 Extract combo is an excellent set of tools that will help get you there.

Good quality and accurate refractometers have always been expensive. In comes the difluid one. It's not the most accurate, but it's accurate enough for a good reading on TDS and Extraction yield for coffee nerds. It also costs a fraction of the cost of most of the popular ones. Good tool for people who are just driving into it

If you are a coffee enthusiast and want to improve every day, this combo is for you! The scale is exact; it can sense if you put 1 or 2 beans extra in your doses. Also, it indicates the amount of gr of water you pour into your coffee per second (this is perfect if you use Chemex or V60). The R2 refractometer is very easy to use, and it comes with an app that helps you calculate the ideal cup of coffee (using the SCA measures and others).

The only reason someone would say this is good is if they truly don’t have a questioning mind. If you were to take the first reading and just accept it, then this is a great too. However, if you put it up to the smallest bit of scrutiny it will quickly fall apart. I read the same coffee multiple times and had readings. All over the place. This happened with three different coffees. No matter how much I tried to control the variables, I zeroed it out every time, nothing helped.DO. NOT. BUY.

I'll start with explaining why my measurements on the pictures are so low. First was a tea and 1.8% was a quite weak coffee that I usually drink. The device is super simple to use which is why it only needs 1 button:- press once to start, and once it's on - press once again to start measuring,- hold to turn off,- press twice (with holding the second press) to calibrate - super useful when you're changing your water (for example just put a fresh filter in).The results are quick and hopefully accurate, the whole process takes only seconds. The refractometer has a quality build and you can see attention to details. They even included awesome metal spoon that helps a lot with pouring liquid into the test tray.Overall I think this is too expensive product that won't really improve the quality of my morning coffee.

Very well built durable construction that is easy to hold and use. The reading is clear and quick in the single test mode and data results on the app are thorough and clear to read as well should you need more detailed in information. The key to proper results will likely end up revolving around proper calibration so be sure to use to calibrate with the same water source as the machine. For me it was a little bit trickier as my machine has a filter inside the water tank. To get a proper water sample I ran the boiled water for tea function and let it cool down.

Works with coffee, which is all I use it for.Pros:Compact sizeGives repeatable results, so I think it's pretty accurate. It's +/- 0.1%Well built, better than I expected.Works fastSoftware (Android app) is based around coffee, but I don't really use that. I use it for dialing in my grind & flow rate.Cons:None really, I need to have distilled water on hand for calibration, but that's expected, so not really a negative.

The DiFluid R2 is a great alternative to the VST refractometer, it costs a fraction and based on side-by-side comparisons with the VST at work it's just as accurate and consistent. The VST is bigger and I feel has better build quality. I keep my R2 in the original box and store it in a drawer in the kitchen. I use it about 3 to 4 times a week and calibrate once a week. So far, it has worked well. The spoon works very well for me and I appreciate it's non-stick surface because it makes it very easy to clean. The same is true for cleaning the refractometer lens, I just place a small piece of paper towel over the lens to absorb the coffee, I don't wipe or apply pressure to prevent any scratches. I then place a drop or two of distilled water on the lens and drop another small piece of paper towel to absorb the water, then dry it off with a dry Q tip with very light pressure. As a final step I use the microfiber to lightly dab the lens to make sure it's completely dry.I gave it 4 stars for ease of use because it is very small and light and I feel you have to be really really gently, unlike the VST which is rubberized and feels really sturdy. Having said that, the screen is backlit which makes it very easy to read. Overall, no regrets with this product. 5 stars.

Coffee addicts will love this. Coffee retractometers are really good for giving insight into the properties of brewed coffee by looking at the measure of light refraction. It's really nerdy and scientific and a bit complex but the device is easy to understand. I usually reset the refractometer to zero by using distilled water and then stir the coffee really well before using the machine. You use the water, then measure the weight of your grounds and then your final brew. The app that you download onto your phone will give you a set of numbers and graphs that show if the coffee is too weak, strong, bitter, etc.I would say that if you become a coffee addict, and want to learn more about the difference between pour overs, machines, french press, and types of water in your own house, this is a pretty interesting way to give a brief overview. It's nifty and I don't know how to compare with other machines as this is my first one but I think with more time, you'll become an incredible coffee brewer.

Just got my device last week. Seems like a great product that corrected some of the problems with the R1 but so far I can’t use it to its full potential since the app for iOS only works in simplified Chinese and not when switched to English. Contacted support on the website chat. They said they would notify their tech department. Can’t wait for it to work since the device feels like it’s superb quality.Update: in touch with support throug Amazon. They are saying the technical team is working on a fix.Update 2 (Feb. 27): The app now works. The device is working really well. Solid performance but I will test it more in coming weeks.

This device does not come very cheap, but if you are really willing to step up your coffee game then it's something you might look into. The build quality is great, the screen is bright and visible compared to other brands that only have eink display, and it's usbc rechargeable. The manual needs a bit of work, it does explain the basic steps but lacks in info for beginners. You'll need to research the internet on what and how to use it best. The app is simple enough but also won't give much info, only the device readings and the data ( grams used, infusion temp, etc) that you complete yourself for each reading. The device connects to bluetooth once you scan the qr code on the back, but i had some issues reconnecting for different sessions, specially if other devices (like smartwatch) use the phone also; another code scan solved the issue.Regarding the readings, I had different results for similar conditions but depending on the temperature and lighting; it's best to let the coffee cooldown and test in mostly similar environment.I can totally find this useful for someone that wants to improve the coffee brew with mathematical precision, but that requires measuring water temperature and exact quantity of coffee used, which most of us won't usually bother with. It's a great thing to try and play with though.
