How to Check If You Need Mounting Spools (Docking Kits) for a Sissy Bar or Luggage Rack

Before purchasing a sissy bar or luggage rack, it's important to determine whether you need separate mounting spools (also called docking hardware) for installation. Here’s how to check:

  • Look for existing docking hardware – If your bike has small, round, or oval-shaped anchor points near the rear fender, it likely already has docking hardware installed (See Pictures Above).
  • Check for hidden mounting points – On some models, such as the Indian Chieftain, the docking spools may be covered by a body panel insert between the saddlebags and the rear fender.
  • Inspect for bolt holes – If there are only bolt holes without protruding spools, you’ll likely need to purchase a separate mounting kit for proper installation.

By checking these details in advance, you can ensure a smooth installation process and avoid compatibility issues with your motorcycle.

Threads are all bad won’t thread into my mounting points and can’t even thread into a die to rethread them

They do what they say they will do. They feel durable and not cheaply made. In line with all Indian accessories, they are ridiculous expensive though.

I got these for my 2020 Indian Challenger. It's a nice complete kit and comes with everything pictured. However, when installing on my bike I noticed I didn't really need the entire kit as I didn't need to replace the spools that already came with my bike, I just needed to swap out the bag screws with the quick release ones. In that way it made install very easy, but most of the kit was not needed for me. The same will probably be true if you have a model with hard bags already (Challenger, Chieftain, Roadmaster). If you want to add hard bags to a bike that doesn't have them, this would work great. Or you can keep the spools as extras. Otherwise, you don't really need whole kit for models with factory hard bags.
