This kit... It is extremely adorable and would be a great way to get someone introduced to crochet!...If it was just a bit better. This is not a kit that could just be handed over to a beginning crocheter. There are conflicts with what their "Basic Crochet Techniques Guide" calls things... and what the instructions ( which are NOT physically included in the kit but is a separate download that you have to scan to get/dropbox ) call things. The first noticeable area is the Magic Ring. The guides book calls it Magic Ring while the pattern instructions calls it a Magic Circle. This is minor, but might cause confusion in the younger beginner to crochet. There is also a line in the pattern for the "basket" that calls for R8:BLO42dc=42sts BLO is not mentioned in their techniques book. Again, someone who has experience doing crochet will either know this, Back Loop Only, or know to look it up and that it isn't just a poorly translated language issue. The other issue with the kit is the yarn itself. While inexpensive yarn is expected at this price point.... The yarn is a simple three strand yarn that is *very* loosely twisted. This might make some of the more... detail oriented beginners slightly more frustrated as the hook can slip in the wrong place of the yarn and end up only grabbing a single or double strand of the yarn instead of the entire loop. One of the nice things with this kit is that it comes with both a plastic and metal darning needle. Most beginner kits come with the plastic version which can become fatigued and break over time, sometimes after one use if they are particularly flimsy. Having the metal needle is a nice bonus. The hook is also confusing. The patterns do not call out a hook size. The pictures in the listing show 2.0 mm for the hook size... yet a 2.5mm hook was included. If the photos were taken, and the instructions written for a 2.0 mm hook... the results will not be the same and there might not be enough yarn in the kit to finish the patterns. The hook itself is a decent beginner hook for smaller/more dexterous hands. The handle is full rubber/silicone and has a good feel to it. It is just really small in my hands and not comfortable to hold for long use. There are four pouches of filling included, each pouch is vacuum sealed to save on space. It looks to be enough for the projects, but that has yet to be seen when at the actual end of the patterns. There is also some green enameled wire that is not explained in the patterns as to its use. It is suspected to be used for shaping of things like the pots for the hanging patterns, to give some strength to the rims when hung. Can this kit be completed by a beginner. Yes, it can... provided there is an experienced crocheter available for questions and help with the learning process. The use of un-defined stitches in the patterns and implied interchangable terms between the techniques guide and patterns will definitely be helped with a knowledgeable crocheter nearby. It is not a kit that I would gift to someone new to the craft and leave it to them to find everything they need included in the physical kit.
