Common symptoms of a bad car fan clutch:
Engine overheating
Engine overheating at low speed or when stopped is the most-common fan clutch failure symptom
Insufficient heat
Insufficient heat in winter is another common problem but caused by the opposite fan clutch failure. If the fan clutch seizes, it remains engaged all the time, cooling off the engine too much.
Excess fan noise
Excess fan noise at high speed is caused by the same problem, a seized fan clutch. This can cause bearing damage, radiator damage if the blades flex too far, or even shatter a plastic fan.
Fan spins
Fan spins after engine shut-down might indicate a weak clutch. Silicone fluid leaking from the fan clutch would cause this problem.

Added photos so you know I'm not a fake reviewer. Yes, this did not look exactly like the OEM one. Also yes, it fit and functioned as if it was. 2002 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 with a history of overheating. I replaced everything except the fan clutch because the old one was still spinning. Know that even broke ones spin! Realized I didn't have that truck-like fan roar when it was hot and finally replaced it after three instances of overheating. Tested today at 109 degrees outside temp with AC full on, sitting still and at 70 MPH. Solid optomal 240 degrees the whole time! Just installed, so I can't say if it will last, but I will update this review if it doesn't. Great price makes it worth the risk.

Ordered the fan clutch pictured in the listing, and the fan clutch I received is one of the cheap (Made in China) Hayden clones, and not the unit pictured in the listing. This will install and fit like the one pictured, yet once the thermostat opens, my Jeep sounded like a Mack truck. I had previously purchased a Hayden clone from a different seller (which their listing photo matched what I received, like my review photo), and it disengaged like it was supposed to at a cold start, but once the thermostat opened, the fan roared. It didn't matter whether I was sitting or doing 70MPH. This clutch behaves exactly the same. Would have been a great value for the money had the thermostatic spring been calibrated to operate at a higher temperature like the Genuine Hayden clutches. Would not have purchased this had the image been correct. Only reason for 2 stars is the way it operates won't cause overheating. It will shorten the life of the unit being fully locked most of the time.
