We use a phosphate free cleaning solution to deep clean the macro and micro pores for our activated carbon. This process removes a tremendous amount of additional trapped ash. Our carbon which the final steps are truly processed in a lab has one of the lowest leaching phosphate levels on the market.

I kinda wish the crystals were a little bigger, but it does what it says it does. I have a 40 gallon tank with a lot of wood. Water became dark brown, even after allowing the wood to seep; the water is now a light tea color. I integrated the activated carbon into the filter and the water stays relatively transparent/light brown. I just have to replace/rinse the carbon once every few weeks or every other month. Really happy with the purchase overall.
